Makaravilakku 2025: Lakhs Gather At Sabarimala Temple Amid Maha Kumbh Crowds
As North India witnesses a massive influx of devotees at the Maha Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj, Kerala's revered Sabarimala Temple is also drawing lakhs of pilgrims for the auspicious Makaravilakku Darshan. On January 14, 2025, an estimated 1.5 lakh devotees gathered at the Sabarimala hill shrine to seek the blessings of Lord Ayyappa.

Authorities confirmed that all necessary arrangements had been made for the smooth conduct of the festival. The Travancore Devaswom Board (TDB) has ensured that devotees stationed at Sannidhanam and nearby areas receive three meals a day, delivered directly to their locations. Additional provisions, including drinking water counters and light refreshments, have also been arranged to accommodate the massive crowd.
Meanwhile, the Maha Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj saw an astonishing turnout, with an estimated 1.5 crore devotees taking a holy dip at the sacred Sangam on the first day of the event. This simultaneous display of devotion at two significant religious gatherings highlights the deep-rooted spiritual traditions of India.
Makaravilakku Darshan and 'Thiruvabharanam' Procession
A major highlight of the Makaravilakku festival is the ceremonial 'Thiruvabharanam' (sacred jewelry) procession, which originates from Pandalam-a place associated with Lord Ayyappa's childhood. On January 14, the procession reached Sabarimala's Sannidhanam, where the sacred ornaments were placed on the deity.
Key officials, including Devaswom Minister V N Vasavan, Tamil Nadu's Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Minister P K Sekar Babu, and senior temple authorities, received the Thiruvabharanam at designated points along the route.
Following the jewelry adornment, the grand 'Mahadeeparadhana' was performed, marking the pinnacle of the festival. The sacred ghee abhishekam, using ghee brought from the Travancore palace, took place at 8:45 AM during the Makara Sankrama Muhurtham.
Advisory for Devotees
TDB President P S Prasanth urged devotees to follow all safety instructions issued by the police while returning from the temple. He specifically requested that women and children avoid visiting on January 14 due to the anticipated heavy rush and instead opt for darshan between January 15 and 17, when the 'Thiruvabharanam' darshan will still be available.
To facilitate smooth transportation, KSRTC has deployed around 800 buses at Pampa, including 150 shuttle services to assist pilgrims on their return journey.
A Divine Spectacle Across India
The simultaneous religious fervor at Sabarimala and Maha Kumbh underscores India's diverse and vibrant spiritual landscape. As lakhs gather at these holy sites, the deep devotion of the faithful remains a testament to the enduring cultural and religious traditions of the country.
