UP Connectivity Set For Major Boost With 12 New Expressways Planned, Airport Network To Expand
Uttar Pradesh is rapidly strengthening its transport infrastructure, placing expressways and airports at the centre of its long-term connectivity strategy. With several projects already operational and many more in the pipeline, the state is aiming to build a dense road network and an expanded aviation system to support economic activity, industry and mobility.

Expressway expansion targets a state-wide high-speed network
The state government has proposed 12 new expressways, adding to the existing network that already connects key regions. At present, seven expressways are operational across Uttar Pradesh, while construction work is ongoing on three additional corridors.
Once all proposed projects are completed, the total number of expressways in the state will reach 22. This expanded network is expected to significantly cut travel time, improve connectivity between industrial and urban hubs, and strengthen the movement of goods across regions.
Airport network grows with focus on regional and international access
Uttar Pradesh is also scaling up its aviation infrastructure. The state currently has 16 functional airports, including 12 domestic airports and four international airports. Construction is underway on eight more airports, which will extend air connectivity to additional districts and support tourism, business travel and logistics.
One of the most significant projects is the international greenfield airport at Jewar. Once operations begin, Uttar Pradesh will become the first state in India to have five international airports. This development is expected to influence passenger traffic patterns and attract investments linked to aviation, cargo handling and allied services.
Economic indicators show strong growth over eight years
Official figures indicate a sharp rise in key economic indicators between 2016-17 and 2024-25. Per capita income has more than doubled during this period, while the state budget and capital expenditure have seen substantial increases. Tax revenue, the number of factories and export volumes have also risen significantly.
Despite increased spending, the public debt-to-GDP ratio has marginally declined, suggesting fiscal expansion alongside relative debt stability.
Industrial land development aligned with transport infrastructure
Transport infrastructure growth is being supported by large-scale industrial land development. Under the Bundelkhand Industrial Development Authority, plans are in place to acquire 56,662 acres of land for industrial purposes.
These land parcels are expected to host factories, warehouses and related facilities that will depend on expressways and airports for efficient supply chains and freight movement. The state's economic output, estimated at ₹13.30 trillion in 2016-17, has risen to around ₹30 trillion in 2024-25 and is projected to move towards ₹36 trillion during 2025-27, according to government estimates.
