Malayali Nurse Nimisha Priya, Accused In A Murder Case, To Be Executed On July 16: Unconfirmed Reports

According to unconfirmed reports, a Malayali nurse, Nimisha Priya, is facing execution in Yemen's capital, Sanaa, on July 16. She was convicted of murdering a Yemeni national. Although some media outlets have reported this development, her family and the Save Nimisha Priya Action Council have not confirmed it. The council has been working to secure her release through legal means.

Ms. Priya was sentenced to death in June 2018 for the murder of Talal Abdo Mehdi. Her appeal was dismissed by Yemen's Supreme Judicial Council in November 2023, but they left open the option of paying blood money. The Houthi rebels currently control Sanaa.

Efforts to Save Nimisha Priya

Prema Kumari, Ms. Priya's mother, arrived in Sanaa on April 23, 2024, to help save her daughter. She has been staying with Samuel Jerome Bhaskaran, a council member who has worked in Yemen for over 24 years. He has been negotiating with the victim's family for blood money acceptance.

The Save Nimisha Priya Action Council continues to seek confirmation from official sources regarding the execution date. Subhash Chandran K.R., a Supreme Court lawyer and council member, stated that they have not received any official word from the Ministry of External Affairs.

Nimisha Priya's Background

Originally from Palakkad, Ms. Priya moved to Yemen in 2008 to support her parents financially. She worked in several hospitals before opening her clinic in 2015. Conflicts arose with Mehdi, her business partner when she accused him of embezzling funds.

An official source mentioned that they have been monitoring the situation since Ms. Priya's conviction and are in regular contact with local authorities and her family to provide assistance. They continue to follow developments closely.

Ms. Priya allegedly injected Mehdi with sedatives while trying to retrieve her passport from him. Unfortunately, an overdose led to his death in July 2017. Her husband, Tomy Thomas, also stated he hasn't received any official communication about the execution.
