Tragedy On Pilgrimage: Three Dead, Several Injured As Ambulance Plows Into Tirumala Tirupati Pilgrims
On a tragic Monday in Tirupati, Andhra Pradesh, an ambulance veering out of control struck a group of devotees journeying to the Sri Venkateswara Temple at Tirumala, resulting in the loss of three lives and leaving several injured. The incident, reported by News18, occurred close to Narasingapuram in the Chandragiri mandal. The victims, part of a pilgrimage from Punganur to Tirumala, faced this calamity under conditions of reduced visibility due to dense fog, although the precise cause of the accident remains unclear.
The impact was devastating, claiming the lives of two women at the scene and inflicting severe injuries on others. The deceased were identified as Pedda Reddamma, aged 40, and Lakshmamma, aged 45, both hailing from Champalapalli in the Ramasamudram mandal of Annamayya district. The injured were promptly transported to Ruia Hospital in Tirupati for medical attention. In light of this tragic event, authorities have initiated a thorough investigation to determine its cause, highlighting the perilous conditions created by dense fog in the region.

This tragic occurrence is part of a broader pattern of accidents attributed to dense fog conditions across North India. On the preceding Sunday, a series of four separate bus crashes resulted in the deaths of three women and injuries to many others. These buses were transporting members of farmer unions to Punjab's Khanauri and Haryana's Tohana for a 'Kisan maha panchayat'. The visibility near zero due to dense fog was a significant factor in these accidents.
The dense fog has not only led to accidents but also severely disrupted travel and daily life. Delhi experienced its longest dense fog spell of the season between Friday and Saturday, causing numerous flight cancellations and train diversions. "Compared to Saturday's 9-hour zero visibility spell, Palam experienced a relatively shorter duration of 3.5 hours of zero visibility on Sunday," an official was quoted by the news agency PTI. Moreover, the cold wave sweeping across North India brought fresh snowfall to most parts of Kashmir on Sunday, with temperatures in Srinagar hovering around the freezing point. In response to the intense cold, Jharkhand announced the closure of schools from January 7-13 to safeguard against the expected cold wave.
The recent accidents underscore the dangers posed by harsh winter weather, particularly dense fog, which significantly reduces visibility and increases the likelihood of similar tragic incidents. As investigations continue, authorities are likely to scrutinize the role of weather conditions closely while exploring measures to prevent future accidents under similar circumstances.
