PM Modi to Inaugurate New Metro Corridors, Lay Foundation for Mega Delhi Projects

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to launch a large package of Delhi Metro development projects and housing upgrades worth about Rs 33,500 crore on Sunday. The public event will mark the start of new metro links and major government housing redevelopment across the city, aimed at better transport, modern homes and more efficient use of public land.

The programme will take place from 10am at the DDA ground on Burari Road near Sant Nirankari Mandal. Modi will inaugurate completed stretches of the Delhi Metro and new General Pool Residential Accommodation (GPRA) housing, while also laying foundation stones for further metro expansion and additional government flats in key neighbourhoods.

Delhi Metro development projects and GPRA plan for government housing

The GPRA redevelopment targets seven government housing colonies that had become old and unsafe. These areas cover around 537 acres in Sarojini Nagar, Netaji Nagar, Nauroji Nagar, Kasturba Nagar, Thyagraj Nagar, Sriniwaspuri and Mohammadpur. Many buildings were low-rise blocks, with ageing structures and poor facilities, despite growing pressure for more homes for central government employees.

Officials said the entire GPRA and Delhi Metro development projects package follows a self-sustaining financial model. Around 69.4 acres, or 12.9% of the total project land, will be used for commercial and residential sale. Revenue from this limited monetisation is expected to exceed Rs 35,100 crore, covering the redevelopment cost of about Rs 32,800 crore and leaving a surplus above Rs 2,300 crore.

Under the GPRA plan, the old quarters will be replaced with modern high-rise towers and upgraded amenities. Over 21,000 new flats will come up across the seven colonies, along with better roads, services and public spaces. Modi will open 2,722 of these flats and lay the foundation stone for another 6,632 units in Sarojini Nagar, Netaji Nagar, Kasturba Nagar and Sriniwaspuri.

Delhi Metro development projects and Phase V-A network expansion

The Delhi Metro development projects include two new operational stretches and the start of three more corridors. The Majlis Park-Maujpur link on the Pink Line and the Deepali Chowk-Majlis Park section on the Magenta Line will be inaugurated. At the same event, Modi will lay the foundation stone for three additional lines under Delhi Metro’s Phase V-A expansion.

Chief minister Rekha Gupta said the Delhi Metro development projects would help shift more people towards public transport. Gupta said, "These projects will not only provide improved convenience for commuters but will also help reduce the pressure of private vehicles on roads and strengthen efforts to control pollution," highlighting expected gains for both travel time and air quality in the capital.

CM Rekha Gupta also underlined the coordination between the Delhi government and the Centre on the Delhi Metro development projects. Gupta said that work on the network matches the broader transport vision of Modi. Gupta said, "Improved public transport will reduce people's dependence on private vehicles, thereby helping ease traffic congestion and curb pollution."

The extended metro lines under the Delhi Metro development projects are expected to help commuters beyond Delhi’s borders. Interlinked routes will improve daily travel for people from Noida, Faridabad and Ballabhgarh. Better interchange points with the new sections should reduce the number of separate journeys needed across the National Capital Region.

Authorities said many GPRA flats were no longer safe, with nearly 40% declared uninhabitable. At the same time, there was a shortage of more than 20,000 homes for central government staff. The Delhi Metro development projects’ housing component will provide over 9,350 modern flats for employees and create about 48 lakh square feet of office space, which officials said would improve administrative functioning.
