Officegoers Stuck as Traffic Chokes Wadala–BKC and Mumbai–Pune Expressway

Heavy traffic disrupted movement across key Mumbai corridors on Wednesday, February 11, with long delays reported at the Wadala-BKC-Chunabhatti flyover, Kalanagar flyover and on stretches of the Mumbai-Pune Expressway.

Officegoers said extended travel times have begun affecting daily schedules, with some reporting delays of up to 30 minutes at a single signal during peak hours.

Congestion was particularly severe at the Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) flyover and along the southbound arm of the Western Express Highway near Kalanagar in Bandra. Several motorists alleged that poor signal coordination and weak enforcement of heavy vehicle movement restrictions during restricted hours are contributing to repeated bottlenecks.

Frustrated commuters took to X to highlight the situation and tagged the Mumbai Traffic Police seeking intervention. One user complained about the "ridiculous state" of traffic management at the Wadala-BKC-Chunabhatti stretch, claiming it takes nearly half an hour to cross a single signal. Another motorist reported being stuck for nearly an hour near the end of the Kalanagar flyover.

Meanwhile, traffic on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway slowed again near Lonavala after a cement container broke down between Talegaon and Malavali in Raigad district, creating a slow-moving queue stretching nearly 20 km.

The disruption followed the recent clearance of a chemical gas tanker that had overturned near the Adoshi tunnel. The tanker accident had blocked the expressway for nearly 32 hours, with traffic halted for safety checks before normal movement resumed.

Elsewhere in the city, traffic along the Khervadi Bridge stretch of the BKC southbound corridor slowed briefly on February 10 after an ambulance broke down mid-carriageway. Officials later cleared the vehicle and restored flow.

With multiple breakdowns, peak-hour pressure and infrastructure strain converging across major routes, commuters say traffic congestion is increasingly becoming a daily challenge on Mumbai's roads.
