Mumbai’s Air Quality Deteriorates On Tuesday, Several Areas Record High Pollution
Mumbai woke up to deteriorating air quality on Tuesday morning, with pollution levels slipping further into the Unhealthy category across most parts of the city. As per real-time data recorded at 10.18 am, the city's overall Air Quality Index (AQI) stood at 176 (US standard), indicating air conditions that can pose health risks, especially for children, the elderly, and people with respiratory ailments.
Overall air quality status
The AQI of 176 places Mumbai firmly in the Unhealthy bracket, meaning prolonged exposure may cause breathing discomfort, aggravate asthma, and lead to reduced lung function. The city's pollution levels were 1.01 times higher than the Maharashtra average, suggesting that Mumbai continues to remain one of the more polluted urban pockets in the state.

On Monday, the air quality across the city had largely hovered in the Unhealthy range as well, with Mumbai recording an overall AQI of 155, indicating a marginal but noticeable deterioration overnight.
PM2.5 and PM10 remain key concerns
Data from multiple monitoring stations shows that PM2.5 and PM10 concentrations remain significantly elevated, well above safe limits recommended by health agencies. PM2.5 levels, which consist of fine particles that can penetrate deep into the lungs and bloodstream, ranged from moderate to extremely high across localities. PM10 levels, associated with road dust and construction activity, also remained high in most zones.
Severe pollution hotspots
While most areas reported Unhealthy air quality, a few locations slipped into the Severe category, raising alarm. Bhakti Park recorded an AQI of 224, with PM2.5 levels touching 149 and PM10 at 174, making it one of the worst-affected areas. MHB Colony also reported Severe air quality with an AQI of 217, while Shell Colony, Swastik Park, and Juhu Tara crossed the 200-mark, indicating extremely poor breathing conditions.
These pockets are likely to see increased health complaints, including eye irritation, throat discomfort, coughing, and shortness of breath.
Widespread Unhealthy conditions
Most major residential and commercial zones across Mumbai continued to report Unhealthy AQI levels. Areas such as Bandra (175), Bandra East (182), BKC (166), Kurla (177-186), Mulund West (178), Wadala East (186) and Wadala West (189) showed persistently high pollution readings.
Prominent locations including Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport (172), Mumbai US Consulate (187), Colaba (170), Worli (167) and Vile Parle West (176-184) also remained under Unhealthy air conditions, highlighting that pollution is affecting both coastal and inland areas alike.
A few relatively better pockets
Only a handful of areas showed comparatively lower pollution levels. Gamdevi Station 1 recorded an AQI of 129, placing it in the Poor category - still unsafe for sensitive groups but marginally better than the city average. However, no part of Mumbai reported air quality in the Moderate or Good categories.
Weather conditions offer little relief
Temperatures across the city ranged between 22°C and 28°C, with humidity levels hovering between 50% and 60%. Such conditions, coupled with low wind movement, may be limiting the dispersion of pollutants, allowing particulate matter to remain suspended in the air for longer durations.
Health advisory
With air quality remaining consistently poor, health experts advise residents to limit outdoor activities, avoid strenuous exercise in open spaces, and use masks if stepping out for long periods. People with asthma, heart disease, and other respiratory conditions are urged to follow medication schedules and seek medical help if symptoms worsen.
Unless weather conditions improve or pollution sources are curbed, Mumbai's air quality is expected to remain under stress in the coming days.
