UP Government Introduces ‘The Shadow’ App To Track Safety, Movement And Studies Of Girl Students
Uttar Pradesh introduces The Shadow app, a digital safety and academic management tool for girl students. It features parent-first approval, SOS alerts, QR-based gate passes, and real-time movement and study tracking, aiming to balance independence with protection.
Uttar Pradesh has introduced a new digital tool to strengthen safety for girl students on campus. The Yogi Adityanath government has supported “The Shadow” app, created at the UP State Institute of Forensic Sciences. The app links security with academic management, aiming to protect students while also tracking their studies.

According to officials, “The Shadow” is designed as a complete digital ecosystem centred on safety. Once registered, each student remains digitally connected with the institute at all times, like a constant shadow. The system focuses strongly on daughters studying in technical courses, helping them feel secure and more self-reliant.
How The Shadow app tracks movement and academic activities
Deputy Director Chiranjeev Mukherjee said that “The Shadow” has been fully developed by B.Tech students of the institute. The app does more than handle classroom work. It officially records every movement of students, including entry, exit, leave requests and other campus activities, through a digital system.
The platform stores detailed academic information for each learner in one place. Attendance, assignments, examination results and overall academic progress are all available on the app. Students, parents and teachers access the same data, which helps increase transparency. This shared view is expected to clarify responsibilities and make monitoring easier for everyone.
Parent-First Approval feature in The Shadow app
A key element of the app is the built-in “Parent-First Approval” mechanism. When any girl student seeks permission to leave the campus or requests any special authorisation, the app first sends the request to parents. No approval is completed until parents give clear consent through the system.
This extra verification layer aims to strengthen protection for daughters and reassure families. Parents know when and why their child steps out, while students still retain regulated freedom. Officials believe this structure balances independence and safety, without placing surprise restrictions on regular academic life or necessary movements.
SOS alerts and QR-based security in The Shadow app
The Shadow app also carries an integrated SOS emergency call facility. If any girl feels unsafe or faces a threatening situation, one tap on the SOS sends instant alerts. Both institute authorities and parents receive the warning, allowing quicker response and timely intervention during emergencies.
Along with the SOS system, the institute has adopted a QR code-based digital gate pass. Every authorised entry or exit is scanned and recorded. This process aims to prevent unauthorised access and discourage unwanted activities on campus. Administrators can track gate movements in real time, strengthening physical and digital surveillance.
B.Tech developers behind The Shadow app initiative
The app has been created by B.Tech students Harsh and Aditya Mishra, working under the guidance of Assistant Professor Dr. Neha Singh. Technical teams at the UP State Institute of Forensic Sciences supported the development process so that security and academic features could run on a single integrated platform.
Explaining the wider idea, Deputy Director Chiranjeev Mukherjee said, “The 'The Shadow' app is a powerful example of technological innovation for the safety of daughters, which makes government efforts more effective at the institutional level. This app shows how digital technology can further strengthen security arrangements. It is like a 'digital companion' for students, which will look after their safety, monitoring and academic progress at every moment.”
Officials state that the app aligns with the Yogi government’s focus on safer campuses in Uttar Pradesh. By combining movement tracking, parental consent, SOS alerts and academic records, “The Shadow” offers a single system for institutes, students and families. The model may guide similar security measures at other educational institutions in the state.
