Kanpur–Kabrai Greenfield Highway: ₹5,757 Crore Corridor to Cut Lucknow–Bhopal Travel to 7 Hours

Kanpur to Kabrai: A 118-km greenfield highway will be built under NHAI's Bharatmala project. The ₹5,757-crore corridor will connect Lucknow to Bhopal and cut the 600-km journey to about seven hours. Industrial zones are also planned along both sides of the expressway to boost economic activity.

New expressway to link two state capitals

Kanpur is set to gain direct benefits from a major economic corridor developing between two state capitals. Under the Bharatmala project of the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), a 118-kilometre access-controlled greenfield highway will be constructed from Kanpur to Kabrai in Mahoba district.

The project will connect Uttar Pradesh's capital Lucknow to Madhya Pradesh's capital Bhopal via Kanpur, significantly strengthening inter-state connectivity.

Lucknow to Bhopal in just 7 hours

The highway, estimated to cost around ₹5,757 crore, will pass through Kanpur Nagar, Kanpur Dehat, Hamirpur and Mahoba districts before linking with the Sagar Highway.

At present, travelling the nearly 600-kilometre distance between Lucknow and Bhopal takes about 12 to 14 hours. Once the corridor is completed, the journey is expected to be reduced to roughly seven hours, saving both time and fuel.

Industrial zones to boost economy

NHAI has already begun the tendering process for the project. Project Director Pankaj Yadav said the highway is an important component of the Bharatmala programme and will establish stronger connectivity between Lucknow and Bhopal while encouraging economic activity throughout the corridor.

A key feature of the greenfield route is the development of dedicated industrial areas on both sides. The government aims to strengthen the logistics network so that raw materials reach industrial units on time and finished goods can be transported to markets efficiently.

Wider connectivity for multiple cities

Kanpur, often called the industrial capital of Uttar Pradesh, is expected to expand its industrial base through this project. The highway will also connect to the Kanpur Ring Road near the Magerasa area of Ramaipur.

The ring road already links major national highways passing through the city, enabling smoother travel to Prayagraj, Varanasi, Delhi, Aligarh, Kannauj, Farrukhabad and Jhansi. This is likely to reinforce Kanpur's position as a regional transport hub.

With the Kanpur-Bhopal economic corridor in place, travel time between the two states will reduce considerably, and Bundelkhand and nearby districts are expected to see increased industrial investment, employment generation and trade activity. Experts believe the project could become a milestone in regional economic development and help establish Kanpur as a major national logistics and industrial centre.
