Kerala’s Youngest Organ Donor: 10-Month-Old Alin Sherin Saves Five Lives After Tragic Road Accident

Kerala has witnessed an extraordinary act of compassion as ten-month-old Alin Sherin Abraham from Pathanamthitta became the youngest organ donor in the state. In a deeply emotional decision, her family consented to donate her organs after she was declared brain-dead, offering a second chance at life to five individuals.

Tragic Accident Leads To Life-Saving Decision

Alin sustained critical injuries in a road accident on February 5 near Pallam Borma Junction on the MC Road in Kottayam. The incident occurred around 2.30 pm when the car she was travelling in with her mother and maternal grandparents collided with an oncoming vehicle.

She was first admitted to hospitals in Changanassery and Thiruvalla before being shifted to Amrita Hospital in Kochi on the night of February 6 for specialised treatment. Despite doctors making intense efforts to save her, her condition did not improve, and brain death was confirmed on Wednesday afternoon.

Organs Allocated Through Government System

With the consent of her father, the organ donation process was coordinated through the government's K-SOTTO network. Her heart valve will be sent to Sree Chitra Institute in Thiruvananthapuram, while her liver will go to KIMS Hospital and her kidney to Thiruvananthapuram Medical College. Her eyes will also be donated to the Eye Bank.

This carefully coordinated effort ensures that multiple patients awaiting transplants will benefit from the donation.

Green Corridor Ensures Swift Transport

The organs are being transported by road from Amrita Hospital in Kochi to Thiruvananthapuram under tight security. Police have escorted the ambulance (KL07 DF 3177), which departed around 7.15 pm and is travelling through Kunnumpuram, Edappally, Vyttila, Kundannur, Tripunithura, Thalayolaparambu, Kottayam, Chengannur, Venjaramoodu, and Kazhakkoottam.

Traffic restrictions have been imposed along the route to ensure uninterrupted passage. According to ADGP Sreejith, the vehicle is expected to reach Thiruvananthapuram within three hours.

State Expresses Gratitude To Bereaved Family

Health Minister Veena George extended gratitude to the child's parents for their courageous decision to donate their daughter's organs to save others. She also conveyed her support to the grieving family during this difficult time.

The mortal remains of the child will be handed over to the family soon, but her legacy will live on through the lives she has helped transform.
