Hindu Candidates Among Four Minority Representatives Elected to Bangladesh Parliament
In the recent general elections in Bangladesh, two Hindu candidates were elected to parliament as representatives of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party. They join two other minority representatives, highlighting the participation of diverse communities in the political landscape.
In the recent general elections in Bangladesh, four candidates from minority communities, including two Hindus, emerged victorious. All were nominees of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), which is poised to form the government soon. Goyeshwar Chandra Roy and Nitai Roy Chowdhury, both Hindus, secured seats in Dhaka and Magura, respectively, defeating Jamaat-e-Islami candidates.

The BNP's success was significant, with Tarique Rahman leading the party to a two-thirds majority. They garnered 49.97% of the votes, securing 209 seats. The Jamaat-e-Islami achieved its best performance yet, obtaining 31.76% of the votes and 68 seats. Meanwhile, the National Citizen Party (NCP) won six seats with 3.05% of the votes.
Minority Representation in Bangladesh Elections
Saching Pru, a senior BNP leader and Buddhist from the Marma ethnic community, was elected from Bandarban. Dipen Dewan, another minority candidate from the Chakma ethnic group, won in Rangamati. Dewan's religious identity remains unclear as some describe him as Hindu. He defeated an independent Chakma candidate.
In this election, 79 candidates from religious minority communities contested, including 10 women. Most were Hindus. Of these candidates, 67 were nominated by 22 political parties while 12 ran independently. The Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPB) fielded the most minority candidates with 17.
Political Parties and Minority Candidates
The left-leaning Bangladesh Samyabadi Dal (BSD) and Bangladesh Minority Janata Party (BMJP) each fielded eight minority candidates. The Bangladesh Samajtantrik Dal (BASOD) had seven candidates. The BNP nominated six minority candidates while the Jatiya Party put forward four.
For the first time in its history, Jamaat-e-Islami nominated a Hindu candidate, Krishna Nandi, who is a veteran businessman. Nandi contested from Khulna but lost to a BNP candidate. His participation as a Jamaat nominee was widely discussed despite his defeat.
Hindu Representation in Parliament
The number of Hindu MPs remained consistent with previous elections. In both the 2024 and 2018 elections, 17 Hindu MPs were elected. Most belonged to Sheikh Hasina's Awami League in earlier elections.
Hindus constitute about eight per cent of Bangladesh's population of 170 million people. The inclusion of minority candidates reflects growing diversity in political representation within this Muslim-majority nation.
