Authorities in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, have filed eight cases at Chowk Police Station. Deputy Commissioner of Police Gaurav Bansal confirmed the cases were registered under sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita against eight people and certain X handles.

AI-generated summary, reviewed by editors
The police reported that misleading content and fabricated images, which misrepresented the ongoing beautification efforts at Manikarnika Ghat, were shared on the social media platform X. These images, allegedly linked to Hindu deities, were said to be intended to incite religious sentiments, spread misinformation, and disrupt social harmony.
Complaints and Allegations
A complaint was lodged by Mano, a resident of Tamil Nadu, at Chowk Police Station. Mano's company has been involved in enhancing cremation facilities and beautifying Manikarnika Ghat since November 15, 2025. The complaint highlighted that an X handle user, Ashutosh Potnis, allegedly shared misleading AI-generated images on January 16.
The posts reportedly distorted facts and misled Hindu devotees, causing societal unrest. The police noted that these posts attracted numerous objectionable comments and reposts, further escalating tensions. Bansal stated that spreading such false information aimed to not only hurt religious sentiments but also foster an anti-government mindset.
Legal Actions and Investigations
Given the gravity of the situation, legal actions are being pursued against the X handle users involved in sharing and commenting on the misleading content. Bansal emphasized that a detailed investigation is ongoing. He warned that strict measures would continue against those spreading rumours and misinformation on social media platforms.
Bansal reiterated the commitment to maintaining social harmony by addressing misinformation swiftly. The authorities aim to prevent any further escalation of tensions through decisive legal action against those responsible for spreading falsehoods.
