UPI Outage Impacts Digital Payments Across India

Unified Payments Interface (UPI) services suffer a major disruption on Tuesday evening, affecting digital payments across India. Users report failed transactions on several popular banking and payment apps. Many are left unable to pay at shops, book rides, or complete online orders during the outage window.

Downdetector.in, which tracks service outages using user inputs, shows a fast rise in complaints linked to UPI. Reports come from people trying to pay merchants, transfer money to contacts, and load wallets. For many young users, this disruption affects daily spending and regular bill payments.

UPI outage impact across Indian cities

The outage appears widespread, with heavy impact in major urban centres. Downdetector's live map highlights strong complaint clusters in Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, Hyderabad and Bengaluru. Users in Ahmedabad, Jaipur and Chandigarh also flag similar trouble, suggesting a nationwide issue rather than a city-specific fault.

At one stage during the incident, Downdetector records 413 reports linked to UPI problems. Data on the platform shows 82 percent of users saying payments do not go through. Around 12 percent mention errors when scanning QR codes, while 6 percent report failure during direct fund transfers.

Earlier in the evening, complaints on Downdetector cross 250 before climbing further. The tally later reaches nearly 600 as more users notice issues and log them on the site. The figures hint at a sustained disruption rather than a brief technical glitch lasting only a few minutes.

People posting on Downdetector describe attempts to retry payments across multiple apps, often without success. Many are forced to switch to cash or cards for essential purchases. There is no detailed public explanation yet, but the scale of the UPI outage underlines how dependent daily life has become on instant digital payments.
