Thane: 125 Guests Suffer Suspected Food Poisoning at Haldi Ceremony

More than 100 guests fell ill after a suspected case of food poisoning during a pre-wedding haldi function held in Maharashtra's Thane district, police said on Monday. The incident occurred on Sunday evening at a residential housing complex in Kalyan, triggering panic among families attending the celebration.

According to officials, food was served to guests as part of the ceremony within the limits of Khadakpada police station. Shortly after the meal, several attendees complained of discomfort, with many reporting symptoms such as nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. As the number of people affected rose, organisers and relatives rushed them to nearby hospitals and private clinics for urgent medical care.

Police confirmed that around 100 to 125 people were treated for suspected food poisoning. All of them were later discharged after receiving medical attention. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Kalyan Zone-III) Atul Zende said the prompt response ensured that no one was in serious condition.

A case has been registered, and an investigation is underway to determine the cause of the illness. Officials said the catering service for the event had been arranged from Ahmedabad, and the caterer has been called in for questioning. Police are examining how the food was prepared, stored and transported to the venue.

Food samples collected from the function have been sent for laboratory testing, and authorities are awaiting the results. Based on the findings and statements from those involved, further action will be taken in the case.
