Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi met representatives of several farmer unions at his Parliament office to discuss concerns surrounding the India-US interim trade framework.

The meeting triggered sharp political reactions, with the BJP accusing Gandhi of creating what it called a misleading narrative around the agreement.

Rahul Gandhi interacted with representatives from 17 farmer unions across the country. According to those present, the discussion focused on how the proposed trade framework could impact Indian agriculture and domestic markets.

Farm leaders raised concerns about potential effects on crops such as corn, soyabean, cotton, fruits and nuts. They also called for wider consultation and urged for a nationwide campaign to safeguard farmers' incomes and interests.

Key Concerns Raised By Farmer Groups

During the meeting, farmer representatives flagged several issues related to the trade framework:

• Fear of increased foreign competition impacting local crop prices
• Demand for clarity on tariff cuts and import policies
• Call for wider consultations with farmer organisations before finalising the deal

Some leaders also suggested building a nationwide movement if their concerns are not addressed.

BJP Responds, Calls Meeting "Stage-Managed"

The BJP strongly criticised the interaction, calling it politically motivated. Union Minister Piyush Goyal termed Gandhi's claims "fake" and "fabricated", alleging that the meeting was designed to mislead farmers about the government's policies.

In a social media post, Goyal said the discussion was an attempt to provoke confusion among farmers and questioned the authenticity of the concerns being raised. He asserted that the government has protected farmers' interests in the ongoing trade negotiations.

What The India-US Trade Framework Says

The interim trade framework between India and the United States aims to reduce tariff barriers while addressing domestic sensitivities. The US has reportedly agreed to lower reciprocal tariffs on several Indian exports, including textiles, leather, footwear and pharmaceuticals.

The government has maintained that a majority of India's agricultural products - around 90 to 95 per cent - remain outside the agreement, ensuring that farmers are shielded from major disruptions.
