Fuel Concerns Rise: Centre to Distribute Kerosene for 60 Days Across States
Amid rising concerns over global energy supply disruptions, the Central government has decided to temporarily distribute kerosene to households for up to 60 days. The move is aimed at easing pressure on domestic cooking fuel availability as geopolitical tensions in the Middle East continue to impact global fuel markets.
According to officials, the kerosene supply will support households in meeting basic cooking and lighting needs during the limited period. Authorities say the step is intended to prevent hardship for families if LPG demand rises or supply becomes uncertain.

To make the distribution system accessible, the government has planned to provide kerosene through selected petrol pumps. In each district, two designated fuel stations will be authorised to supply kerosene to residents.
In addition, the Centre has decided to extend ad hoc kerosene allocation even to 21 States and Union Territories that had earlier been declared kerosene-free under the Public Distribution System (PDS). A formal notification regarding the decision has been issued by the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas.
India Maintains LPG Supply Despite Hormuz Tensions
Despite instability in West Asia and disruptions to global energy transport routes, India has managed to maintain steady fuel supplies. Concerns had increased due to tensions surrounding the strategic Strait of Hormuz, one of the world's most important energy shipping routes.
In a positive development, two Indian-flagged vessels carrying liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) have safely passed through the strait. The ships-BW TYR LPG Carrier and BW ELM LPG Carrier-are transporting nearly 94,000 tonnes of LPG to India.
Officials said BW TYR is expected to reach Mumbai by March 31, while BW ELM is scheduled to dock at Mangaluru on April 1. The safe arrival of these shipments is expected to provide relief as the country monitors developments in the Middle East and global fuel markets.
Authorities continue to keep a close watch on the situation to ensure that domestic fuel supplies remain stable and disruptions are minimized.
