FIR Filed Against Sanjay Singh After He Raises Concerns Over Alleged Damage to Temples at Manikarnika Ghat

Kashi, a city deeply associated with faith and tradition, has once again found itself at the centre of a sensitive debate. Aam Aadmi Party leader Sanjay Singh has raised concerns over alleged damage to temples, Shiva shrines and the statue of Ahilyabai Holkar located along the banks of the Ganga during the current government's tenure. He described the issue as one linked to religious sentiments and heritage, and said that instead of action being taken to address the concerns raised, an FIR was registered against him after he spoke about the matter.

Manikarnika Ghat is not merely a geographical location but holds immense spiritual importance for Hindus. The ghat is historically associated with Ahilyabai Holkar, who is credited with its development in the 18th century. It is widely believed that performing last rites here leads to liberation. Allegations of damage at such a revered site have led to unease among saints, local residents and devotees. Members of the religious community, representatives of the Holkar family and former Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan are among those who have expressed concern and sought clarity on the issue. Amid these developments, attention has also focused on the FIR registered against the leader who highlighted the matter.

Sanjay Singh has stated that he will continue to speak on issues related to faith and heritage and that raising such concerns should not be seen as wrongdoing. He has appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath to ensure that any damage to religious structures is thoroughly examined and that appropriate steps are taken to preserve places of worship and historical legacy.

The Aam Aadmi Party has also responded to the situation. Party national media in-charge Anurag Dhanda said that raising objections over alleged damage to temples at Manikarnika Ghat should be viewed as an expression of concern for religious sentiments rather than as an offence. He added that the party believes in placing public faith and cultural heritage above political differences.

The issue has sparked discussion both in Kashi and on social media. Many are asking why questions related to religious heritage have led to legal action, while others are calling for a balanced and transparent approach that respects faith, law and governance alike. The Aam Aadmi Party has reiterated that its stand is rooted in safeguarding religious sentiment and historical legacy, while also expressing confidence that democratic dialogue remains the right path to address such concerns.
