Mohammad Azharuddin Joins Telangana Cabinet, Strengthening Congress’s Political Base

Mohammad Azharuddin has been inducted into the Telangana cabinet, increasing its size to 16 members. His appointment comes as the Congress party prepares for the Jubilee Hills bypoll, drawing criticism from the BJP over allegations of political appeasement.

In a significant development, Mohammad Azharuddin, a Congress leader and former Indian cricket captain, was inducted into the Telangana cabinet. The swearing-in ceremony took place at Raj Bhavan, where Governor Jishnu Dev Verma administered the oath in the presence of Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy and other senior leaders.

Azharuddin's inclusion has increased the cabinet's strength to 16 members, with two more positions still available. The state assembly allows for up to 18 ministers. This move is seen as strategic for the Congress party, especially with the upcoming Jubilee Hills bypoll on the horizon.

Political Implications and Reactions

The Jubilee Hills constituency, which has over one lakh Muslim voters, is anticipated to be crucial in the election outcome. The bypoll was necessitated following the death of BRS MLA Maganti Gopinath due to a heart attack in June this year.

Despite speculations linking his appointment to the bypoll, Azharuddin clarified that his ministerial role is unrelated. "I am happy. I thank my party's high command, the public and my supporters. This (becoming a minister) has nothing to do with the Jubilee by-election. These are two separate matters and should not be linked," he stated after taking his oath.

BJP's Criticism

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) criticised Azharuddin's induction, labelling it as "political appeasement" aimed at securing minority votes ahead of the bypoll. They argued that this decision prioritises electoral gains over merit-based governance.

The BJP further accused Congress of using this appointment to bolster its support among Muslim voters in Jubilee Hills. They alleged that the timing of this cabinet expansion aligns closely with their campaign strategy for the bypoll.

Azharuddin's Commitment

Azharuddin expressed his dedication to serving all communities fairly. He remarked, "Whatever responsibility I am given, I will work honestly for the upliftment of the oppressed people." He also dismissed any need for validation from critics like G. Kishan Reddy regarding his patriotism.

This political manoeuvre by Congress comes at a critical time as they prepare for a challenging electoral battle in Jubilee Hills. With Azharuddin now part of the cabinet, all eyes are on how this will influence voter sentiment in the upcoming election.
