What initially appeared to be a violent assault has now turned into a case that has sparked widespread debate about pressure, competition, and desperation in entrance exams.
Assault Claim Raises Suspicion
The man, identified as Suraj Bhaskar, a resident of Khalilpur village, first approached the police claiming that a group of unknown men had attacked him and chopped off his foot. Based on his statement, the police registered a case of attempted murder and began searching for the alleged attackers.
However, during questioning, Bhaskar's statements reportedly kept changing.
Investigators noticed several gaps and inconsistencies in his version of events, which led them to suspect that the injury may not have been caused by an external attack. A deeper probe was then launched.
Police Uncover Self-Inflicted Injury
According to officials, the investigation revealed that Bhaskar had amputated part of his own foot using a machine at an under-construction site. Police said he allegedly used anaesthesia to bear the pain.
During a search of the area, syringes believed to contain anaesthetic substances were recovered.
Call detail records and location data also showed that no other person was present near Bhaskar at the time of the incident, ruling out the possibility of an assault.
Police further recovered his personal diary, which reportedly contained notes about his plan to secure admission to an MBBS course by 2026, along with other personal goals.
Pressure to Secure Medical Admission
Bhaskar had completed a D-Pharma course and was preparing for the NEET examination, police said. Investigators also questioned his alleged girlfriend, who reportedly told them that Bhaskar was under immense pressure to get a medical seat and was keen on using the Persons with Disabilities (PwD) quota.
It also emerged that Bhaskar had earlier visited Banaras Hindu University (BHU) in October last year to seek disability-related certification but was unsuccessful. Police believe this failure may have added to his frustration and led him to take such an extreme step.
Social Media Reacts, Investigation Continues
The incident has triggered strong reactions on social media, with many users calling it a reflection of intense competition and mental stress faced by students. Several people questioned whether such incidents point to deeper flaws in the admission system.
Police said Bhaskar is currently in stable condition and undergoing treatment.
His family told investigators that he had been mentally distressed due to repeated failures to secure an MBBS seat. Officials added that efforts are underway to trace the amputated body part and that further legal action will be taken based on the final findings of the investigation.
The case continues to be probed, as authorities examine whether others were aware of or involved in Bhaskar's plan.
