Science Meets The City: Bengaluru To Host A Six-Month Public Talk Series On Sustainable Urban Living

As Bengaluru continues to expand as a global technology and innovation hub, the pressures of rapid urbanisation-ranging from water scarcity and waste management to mobility, energy use and public health-are increasingly shaping everyday city life. Addressing these challenges requires more than policy conversations and technical solutions; it calls for informed citizens and communities who can actively participate in building a more resilient city.

Responding to this need, the Bengaluru Science & Technology (BeST) Cluster, in collaboration with the Bangalore Apartment Federation (BAF), is set to launch a six-month Public Talk Series titled "The Science for Sustainable Urban Living", scheduled to run from January to June 2026.

Taking Science Beyond Institutions and Into Communities

Apartment complexes today function as micro-cities, managing their own water systems, waste streams, energy consumption, mobility needs and shared infrastructure. While scientific institutions and researchers have developed practical, scalable solutions to many urban challenges, this knowledge often remains confined to laboratories, reports or policy discussions.

The Public Talk Series aims to bridge this gap by translating scientific research into practical, community-level action. The initiative seeks to empower apartment residents and citizens with credible, science-based insights that can be directly applied to improve quality of life, sustainability and urban resilience.

Equally important, the series creates a platform for dialogue-bringing together scientists, urban planners, policymakers, civil society organisations and citizens in an open public forum.

Six Themes, Six Months, One Citywide Conversation

The series will comprise six monthly sessions, each focused on a key pillar of sustainable urban living. The confirmed themes and dates are:

  • Waste Management - 31 January 2026
  • Water Security - 28 February 2026
  • Sustainable Mobility - 28 March 2026
  • Sustainable Energy - 25 April 2026
  • Urban Farming - 30 May 2026
  • Urban Health - 27 June 2026

Each session will examine real challenges faced by urban communities, while highlighting practical, science-backed solutions that can be implemented at the apartment or neighbourhood level.

Public Venues Across Bengaluru

To ensure accessibility and encourage wide participation, the talks will be conducted at public venues across Bengaluru. The choice of locations reflects the public-facing nature of the initiative and its intent to engage citizens from across the city.

Hybrid Format and Interactive Elements

Each episode will follow a hybrid format, combining in-person participation with live online streaming to maximise reach and inclusivity. Sessions will feature a moderated 60-minute presentation or panel discussion, followed by a 30-minute interactive Q&A.

Beyond panel discussions, the series will include interactive elements such as quizzes, showcases of community-led good practices, and curated stalls and exhibits highlighting practical sustainability solutions that can be adopted by residential communities.

Speakers will include representatives from academia, government institutions, and non-profits or civil society organisations that work closely with urban communities. Experts will be drawn from BeST's stakeholder network, with inputs from BAF to ensure relevance and diversity of perspectives.

Who the Series Is For

The primary audience for the series includes apartment residents, RWAs and the general public. The initiative also aims to engage urban policy experts, local government officials, start-ups offering civic solutions, NGOs and CSR stakeholders interested in science-driven approaches to urban development.

Building a Lasting Knowledge Resource

Beyond the public discussions, the series seeks to leave behind a tangible legacy. A consolidated publication titled "Science to Society: Handbook for Sustainable Urban Living" will be developed, compiling key insights, best practices and actionable takeaways from all six sessions.

In addition, each lecture will be professionally recorded and archived, creating a permanent learning resource accessible to citizens and communities beyond the duration of the series.

BeST-BAF Collaboration Strengthens Community Engagement

Together, BAF and BeST will drive knowledge sharing, pilot initiatives and adoption of best practices, translating science and innovation into real-world impact for sustainable urban living. The Foundation for Bengaluru Science and Technology (BeST) and the Bangalore Apartments' Federation (BAF) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to collaborate on advancing science and technology engagement at the community level across Bengaluru.

This collaboration marks an important step towards bridging the gap between scientific institutions and urban residential communities, particularly apartment residents, by co-creating platforms for awareness, dialogue and practical application of science and technology in everyday life.

Speaking on the launch, BAF President Satish Mallya said,"Apartment communities are on the frontlines of Bengaluru's sustainability challenges. Through this partnership with BeST, we aim to empower residents with scientific insights that support better governance, compliance and long-term resilience at the community level."

He added that Bengaluru's apartment communities increasingly function as micro-cities, managing challenges related to water security, waste management, energy use, environmental compliance and climate resilience.

"The lecture series will provide residents, AOAs and community leaders access to credible expertise and context-specific knowledge, enabling informed decision-making."

BeST CEO R Anantharaman, speaking on the initiative, said,"Bengaluru has a strong science and innovation ecosystem, but its true impact lies in how effectively this knowledge reaches citizens. This lecture series is an effort to translate rigorous research into practical solutions that communities can understand, trust and adopt."
