Bengaluru Metro Fares May Rise Again As BMRCL Moves Proposal Just a Year After Major Hike

People in Bengaluru might soon have to shell out more for their daily metro rides. Namma Metro fares are on the table for another hike. The Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) has just sent a new fare hike proposal to the Karnataka government-barely a year since the last increase that got everyone talking.

According to reports, the metro operator has recommended a 5% revision in fares. This comes just a year after they made headlines with a massive hike in February 2025, when ticket prices shot up as much as 71%. That move made Namma Metro the priciest metro system in India at the time.

Not surprisingly, people who rely on the metro every day aren't thrilled. Many, especially from middle-income families, say these non-stop fare hikes are hitting their monthly budgets hard-everything's already getting more expensive. "The prices of essentials are high enough. Another hike will just eat into our daily travel money," said one regular commuter from Whitefield.

Some folks worry that if fares keep climbing, people will ditch the metro and go back to buses or their own vehicles. That kind of defeats the whole point of the metro-less traffic and cleaner air for Bengaluru.

Proposed Fare Revision: Sample Routes and Expected Increase

Reports suggest that BMRCL had initially planned to implement the revised fares from February 1, based on recommendations made by a fare revision committee.

Under the proposal:

The minimum fare increase is expected to be ₹1

The maximum hike could go up to ₹5, depending on distance

For long-distance routes:

Majestic to Whitefield and Majestic to Bommasandra fares may rise from ₹80 to ₹84

Majestic to Challaghatta fares could increase from ₹60 to ₹63

Why BMRCL Is Pushing for Another Fare Hike

Officials within BMRCL have maintained that postponing a fare revision could worsen the corporation's financial health. The agency has reportedly told the government that skipping a hike this year may force a steeper increase of up to 10% in the following year.

Sources said internal discussions on the proposal have already taken place, and the recommendation has been formally submitted to the State government for consideration.

Decision Awaited From Karnataka Government

Now, it's all up to the Karnataka government. BMRCL hasn't pulled back the proposal, even though plenty of commuters are unhappy. If the government gives the green light, daily travel will get pricier for thousands across Bengaluru. Still, the metro authority insists it needs the hike to keep trains running and services afloat.
