Bengaluru–Mangaluru Vande Bharat Soon as Hassan–Namma Kudla Electrification Gains Pace

Bengaluru commuters travelling to coastal Karnataka may soon have access to a faster and more comfortable rail option, with a Vande Bharat Express likely to be introduced on the Bengaluru-Mangaluru route.

Electrification work on the Hassan-Mangaluru railway section is progressing steadily, and the Centre has linked the upgrade to the proposed launch of the Bengaluru-Mangaluru Vande Bharat service.

Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said the electrification will enable quicker and more efficient train operations across the challenging ghat section and open the door for new services connecting Bengaluru with Karnataka's coastal belt. He added that the upgrade would also facilitate additional trains on the Karwar-Mangaluru-Bengaluru corridor.

Addressing a press conference at the BJP office in Bengaluru, Vaishnaw said the push is aimed at improving passenger convenience and strengthening economic activity in coastal districts. He linked the project to the wider railway expansion and modernisation initiatives outlined in the recent Union Budget.

Karnataka's Railway Modernisation Drive

Highlighting the scale of ongoing investment, Vaishnaw said Karnataka is witnessing significant railway modernisation. This includes the redevelopment of 51 railway stations under the Amrit Bharat scheme at an estimated cost of ₹2,110 crore. He also noted that 12 Vande Bharat trains are currently operating in the state, expanding access to semi-high-speed services.

According to the minister, the focus remains on upgrading infrastructure, enhancing passenger amenities and increasing the number of modern train services across Karnataka.

High-Speed Rail and Suburban Expansion

Vaishnaw also referred to proposed high-speed rail corridors between Bengaluru and Chennai, and between Bengaluru and Hyderabad. Once operational, he said, travel time between Bengaluru and Chennai could reduce to about 73 minutes, while the Bengaluru-Hyderabad journey may take around two hours.

On the suburban rail front, he said work on all four phases of the Bengaluru suburban railway project is progressing. Dedicated suburban tracks are being planned alongside existing main lines to reduce interference with long-distance services. A revised design framework has been finalised, and officials expect it to accelerate execution.

Long-Standing Demand for Faster Coastal Connectivity

The Bengaluru-Mangaluru route has long been a demand among travellers due to heavy passenger traffic and limited fast rail options. The journey through the Western Ghats often takes several hours, with terrain-related operational constraints affecting speed.

The proposed Vande Bharat service is expected to cut travel time, improve comfort and offer a premium alternative to existing trains, especially for frequent travellers and business commuters.

The issue had also been raised recently by Mohandas Pai, who called for improved connectivity between Bengaluru and coastal Karnataka. While an official launch date has not yet been announced, railway officials indicated that planning is at an advanced stage and operational details will be finalised after necessary approvals.

If introduced, the Bengaluru-Mangaluru Vande Bharat Express would mark a significant upgrade in the state's rail connectivity, offering a faster and more modern travel experience along one of India's most scenic railway routes.
