SpaceX Successfully Launches ISRO's GSAT-N2 Satellite, Boosting India's Communication Network
In a historic moment for international space cooperation, Elon Musk's SpaceX successfully launched the Indian Space Research Organisation's (ISRO) communication satellite, GSAT-N2, from the Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida.
The launch, executed using SpaceX's Falcon 9 rocket, marks the beginning of a promising commercial partnership between ISRO and SpaceX.

GSAT-N2: Revolutionizing Communication in India
The GSAT-N2, also known as GSAT-20, is a high-throughput communication satellite jointly developed by ISRO's Satellite Centre and Liquid Propulsion Systems Centre. With an impressive data transmission capacity of 48 Gbps, this advanced satellite is set to revolutionize India's broadband and in-flight connectivity services.
Key features of the GSAT-N2 include:
- Operational Lifespan: 14 years
- Payload: Ka-Band High Throughput Satellite (HTS) with 32 user beams, including 8 narrow spot beams for the Northeast and 24 wide spot beams for the rest of India.
- Ground Support: Hub stations located across mainland India to support seamless connectivity.
The satellite's robust infrastructure will also play a crucial role in India's Smart Cities Mission, strengthening the nation's communication backbone.

Why SpaceX Was Chosen for the Launch
Historically, ISRO relied on Arianespace, a French commercial launch service provider, for heavy satellite launches. However, Arianespace's lack of operational rockets prompted ISRO to turn to SpaceX.
India's LVM-3 launch vehicle, capable of carrying payloads up to 4,000 kg, was not sufficient for GSAT-N2's massive 4,700 kg weight. SpaceX's Falcon 9 rocket, known for its reliability and high payload capacity, was the ideal choice to ensure the satellite reached its precise orbit successfully.
Significance of the Launch
1. Enhanced Connectivity: The GSAT-N2 will significantly improve data transmission capacity across India, boosting internet services and enabling better connectivity in underserved areas.
2. Support for Smart Cities: The satellite will aid communication infrastructure essential for India's Smart Cities Mission, promoting urban development.
3. A Milestone in Space Collaboration: This launch sets the stage for more commercial collaborations between ISRO and SpaceX, showcasing India's growing presence in the global space economy.
Statements from Stakeholders
Radhakrishnan Durairaj, Chairman and Managing Director of New Space India Limited, the commercial arm of ISRO, expressed satisfaction with the mission's success, stating, "The GSAT-N2 has been placed in a precise orbit, paving the way for advanced communication solutions for India."
What's Next for ISRO?
While the GSAT-N2 launch is a landmark achievement, ISRO has a packed schedule ahead. In December, the agency is set to launch the European Union's Proba-3 Sun Observation Mission, further cementing India's reputation as a global space leader.
This historic launch underscores the growing synergy between India and international space organizations, heralding a new era of innovation and collaboration in the space sector. The GSAT-N2 promises to transform communication infrastructure in India while strengthening the nation's presence in the global space arena.
