Apple Embraces RCS Messaging: What Is It?
Following years of reluctance, Apple has finally revealed its plan to enable Rich Communication Services (RCS) messaging on iPhones by 2024. This announcement follows consistent efforts by competitors such as Google and Samsung to convince Apple to integrate this technology.
RCS, a messaging standard widely utilized by most Android phones, promises improved interoperability compared to the existing SMS or MMS services. Apple's embrace of RCS is designed to complement iMessage, with the company assuring users that iMessage will persist as the premier and most secure messaging experience.

"Later next year, we will be adding support for RCS Universal Profile, the standard as currently published by the GSM Association. We believe RCS Universal Profile will offer a better interoperability experience when compared to SMS or MMS. This will work alongside iMessage, which will continue to be the best and most secure messaging experience for Apple users," Gadget365 Now quoted the Apple spokesperson as saying.
What Is RCS Messaging?
Enhanced with advanced features, Rich Communication Services (RCS) chats deliver a more sophisticated messaging experience. Key attributes of RCS chats include:
Typing Indicators: Indicates when someone is in the process of typing a message.
Read Receipts: Informs you when someone has read or received your message, and reciprocally shows your contact when you read their message.
Versatile Messaging: Allows message transmission over both mobile data and Wi-Fi.
Media Sharing: Enables the sharing of files and high-resolution photos.
When engaging in RCS chats, your messages utilize the Rich Communication Services (RCS) protocol, transmitted over both Wi-Fi and mobile data. Activation of RCS chats is contingent upon the participation of all conversation participants having RCS capabilities. RCS chats are facilitated either by Google or your mobile carrier. This article specifically delineates RCS chats provided by Google.
It has to be noted that the integration of RCS by Apple does not imply the opening of iMessage to other platforms. As outlined in a report by 9to5 Mac, RCS will specifically replace SMS and MMS while existing independently of iMessage.
Also, RCS messages will appear in the color green, akin to the current SMS messages.
