Turkey's Shooter Yusuf Dikec Wins Silver At Olympics, His 'Swag' Triggers Meme Fest
Turkish air pistol shooter Yusuf Dikec has become the latest sensation on social media after winning the silver medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
A photograph of the 51-year-old athlete, who casually took aim with one hand in his pocket and minimal gear, has gone viral, transforming him into a meme phenomenon.

On X, a post featuring the now-iconic photograph has garnered an incredible 62 million views. The caption humorously pointed out, "Turkey sent a 51 yr old guy with no specialized lenses, eye cover or ear protection and got the silver medal."
Yusuf Dikec's casual confidence has drawn comparisons with other athletes in the air pistol mixed team competition, who were decked out in specialized gear, including special goggles, lenses to prevent blur, and ear protectors for noise.
In contrast, Dikec showed up at the Paris Olympics 2024 with prescription glasses and normal earplugs, ultimately winning the silver medal with one hand in his pocket.
Memes have flooded X and other social media platforms, with users jokingly speculating that Turkey might have sent a secret spy or hitman to the Olympics, who deliberately didn't win the gold to avoid suspicion.
In the 10-meter air pistol mixed team event, Zorana Arunovic and Damir Mikec of Serbia claimed the gold, narrowly defeating the Turkish pair of Sevval Ilayda Tarhan and Yusuf Dikec 16-14 at the Chateauroux Shooting Centre.
While Yusuf Dikec may have missed out on the gold, he has certainly won over social media with his effortless style and swagger. This marks his fifth Olympic appearance and his first-ever medal at the Games.
For the unversed, Dikec is a retired non-commissioned officer of the Turkish Gendarmerie - force responsible for the maintenance of the public order in areas that fall outside the jurisdiction of police forces (generally in rural areas), as well as assuring internal security along with carrying out other specific duties assigned to it by certain laws and regulations.
Meanwhile, Manu Bhaker and Sarabjot Singh secured the bronze for India by defeating the South Korean team of Oh Ye-jin and Lee Won-ho 16-10.
