Tamil Nadu Dragons Advance to Hockey India League Semifinals Despite Penalty Shoot-Out Loss to UP Rudras
The Tamil Nadu Dragons secured a spot in the Hockey India League semifinals despite losing 2-3 to UP Rudras in a penalty shootout on Wednesday. Both teams were tied at 2-2 after regular time. Sudeep Chirmako and Lalit Kumar Upadhyay scored for UP Rudras, while Jip Janssen and Thomas Sorsby netted for the Dragons. The Rudras clinched the shootout victory with a 3-2 score in sudden death.

In a crucial match between the fourth and fifth-placed teams, Tamil Nadu Dragons held fourth place with 17 points, while UP Rudras were fifth with 15 points. A draw was enough for the Dragons to advance, but the Rudras needed a win to secure a top-four finish. The match began evenly, but UP Rudras took the lead when Chirmako scored in the eighth minute.
UP Rudras Take Early Lead
Chirmako skillfully controlled James Albery's pass before shooting past David Harte, the Dragons' goalkeeper. The Dragons sought an equaliser but faced a strong Rudras defence. In the final minute of the quarter, UP Rudras extended their lead to 2-0. They earned a penalty corner, which Harte saved, but Upadhyay capitalised on the rebound for his first goal of the season.
Led by captain Hardik Singh, UP Rudras maintained control as they entered halftime with a two-goal advantage. The Dragons had a chance to score in the 31st minute when Blake Govers found himself in the Rudras zone. Goalkeeper James Mazarelo rushed out, allowing Govers to pass to Selvam Karthi, who failed to convert.
Dragons Fight Back
The Dragons reduced the deficit in the 32nd minute through a well-executed penalty corner routine. Govers faked a shot before passing to Jip Janssen, who scored with a powerful strike. This goal energised the Dragons as they pushed for an equaliser. In the 42nd minute, Janssen's drag flick was blocked by Surender Kumar on the goalline.
Despite multiple circle entries, the Dragons couldn't find another goal as the third quarter ended 2-1. Their persistence paid off in the 53rd minute when Sorsby deflected Govers' drag-flick past Mazarelo to level the score at 2-2. Knowing a draw would suffice for semifinal qualification, the Dragons focused on maintaining possession and running down the clock.
Semi-final Matchups Set
The Tamil Nadu Dragons will face Shrachi Rarh Bengal Tigers in Friday's first semifinal of the Hockey India League. Meanwhile, JSW Soorma Hockey Club will compete against Hyderabad Toofans in the second semifinal matchup.
