Sunny Singh Gill: A Trailblazing South Asian Referee in the Premier League
Sunny Singh Gills journey from prison officer to Premier League referee highlights the contributions and values of South Asian people in British society.
Sunny Singh Gill, a 39-year-old British South Asian, made history on Saturday, March 9, 2024, when he became the first Indian-origin referee to officiate in an English Premier League fixture. The momentous occasion took place at Selhurst Park, where Crystal Palace played against Luton Town, resulting in a 1-1 draw.

A Family Legacy in Football
Sunny's journey in football is deeply rooted in his family's rich footballing heritage. His father, Jarnail Singh, was the first turbaned referee in the history of English League football, officiating 150 matches between 2004 and 2010. Sunny's brother, Bhupinder, also made history as the first Sikh-Punjabi Premier League assistant referee. Growing up in a football-loving household, Sunny and his brother were inspired by their father's passion for the sport.
From Aspiring Footballer to Dedicated Referee
Like many children in Britain, Sunny initially dreamed of becoming a professional footballer. However, after being released from Queens Park Rangers' youth academy, he realized that his true calling lay in refereeing. A pivotal moment came when he watched his father referee a match between Wolves and Burnley in front of a massive crowd. Witnessing his father's presence on the field ignited Sunny's desire to follow in his footsteps.
Challenges and Perseverance
Sunny's refereeing journey was not without its challenges. At the age of 17, he faced difficulties in handling players on the field and took a five-year hiatus from officiating. However, an encouraging conversation with his father motivated him to return to the path of refereeing. Despite the demanding nature of his job as a prison officer, Sunny remained committed to his passion for football and eventually decided to focus solely on his refereeing career.
Breaking Barriers and Achieving Milestones
Sunny's dedication and hard work paid off as he achieved several milestones in his refereeing career. In April 2021, he and his brother Bhupinder became the first pair of British South Asians to officiate in the same Championship match. In November 2023, he became the first South Asian since his father to referee a Championship game. And finally, on March 9, 2024, he made history as the first Indian-origin and British South Asian referee in the English Premier League.
Recognition and Support
Sunny's achievements have garnered recognition and support from various quarters. British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak praised Sunny's accomplishment, highlighting the significant contributions of South Asian individuals to British society. Sunny's journey serves as an inspiration to aspiring referees and demonstrates the power of passion, perseverance, and the pursuit of dreams.
Sunny Singh Gill's remarkable journey from prison officer to Premier League referee is a testament to his unwavering passion for football and his commitment to excellence. As he continues to scale greater heights in his refereeing career, Sunny stands as an inspiration to aspiring referees and a symbol of the rich diversity and talent within the world of football.
