FIH President Dato Tayyab Ikram Considers Revival of Champions Trophy Amid Scheduling Challenges
FIH President Dato Tayyab Ikram expressed interest in reviving the Champions Trophy, a once-prestigious hockey tournament. However, he noted the challenge of fitting it into the already packed international hockey calendar. The Champions Trophy, which started in 1978 and became biennial in 2014, was last held in 2018 before being discontinued by the international federation.

Ikram stated, "We are not ruling out that the Champions Trophy or a similar event might be reintroduced. But we need to look at the space in the calendar." He emphasised the need to balance athletes' demanding schedules with the introduction of new and exciting events. Expanding hockey's global reach and offering opportunities to nations beyond the top nine teams is also a priority.
Expanding Global Reach
Ikram highlighted the importance of involving more countries in FIH events. "We didn’t have anything for second-tier nations. After the top 9–10 nations, we have started the Nations Cup for the next 8 countries," he explained. His goal is to include the top 35 nations in FIH events, a feat never achieved before.
The aim is to bridge the gap between elite and emerging hockey nations while managing an increasingly crowded calendar. "We have to engage other countries as well. So the problem will be that your calendar will be filled more," Ikram added.
Pro League Connect Initiative
Discussing the Pro League, FIH's flagship tournament since 2019, Ikram announced a new project called Pro League Connect. This initiative aims to involve countries outside the top hockey nations. "At the end of last year, I had a meeting with our events department and the Pro League team. We are launching a project called Pro League Connect," he said without revealing much about it.
Ikram stressed that it's crucial for not only top nations but also the entire global hockey community to feel connected to the Pro League. "There will be some innovations, some more initiatives to make it better," he added.
Hockey India League's Return
The Hockey India League (HIL) made a successful comeback after seven years, receiving praise from Ikram. He noted that HIL has unique features and is organised during a dedicated period in the FIH calendar, allowing top athletes worldwide to participate.
Despite some overseas players withdrawing from HIL due to Christmas, Ikram clarified that while FIH fixed the league window, Hockey India and franchises determined exact dates. "How the franchises plan their training and team management is their prerogative," he said.
Ikram emphasised that HIL is more than just a competition; it's an excellent initiative for global hockey. "It is more than matches alone; it’s a great initiative for global hockey," he stated.
