Unbeaten Century by Rachin Ravindra Paves Way for New Zealand's Triumph in World Cup Opener
In an unexpected move, New Zealand batter Rachin Ravindra was sent out at No.3 and responded with an unbeaten century that led his team to a nine-wicket victory over England in the World Cup opener.
The cricketing world was treated to a spectacular display of talent by New Zealand's Rachin Ravindra, who scored an unbeaten 123 in the World Cup opener against England in Ahmedabad on October 5. The young Kiwi batsman surprised everyone, including himself, when he stepped out to bat at No. 3 position - a move that allowed him to play with increased aggression and freedom.
Ravindra's Unexpected Batting Order

Speaking about his unexpected batting order during the post-match press meet, Ravindra said, "That was an interesting one when Gary Stead, NZ coach told me about batting at No 3. I guess I wasn't necessarily expecting it as much because we bat seriously low with Mitchell Santner at No 9 and he's a genuine all-rounder." He went on to add that this unexpected change gave him "the license to go out and express" himself on the field.
A Winning Strategy
This strategy proved successful as Ravindra’s score of 123 combined with Devon Conway’s unbeaten knock of 152 led New Zealand to a nine-wicket victory over champions England. Reflecting upon their triumphant win, Ravindra commented, "I guess it gave that license to go out and express yourself; we did it in our way, and luckily enough it worked on the day."
Mental Preparedness for Top Order Batting
Despite not anticipating batting at No.3 for his team in such a high-stakes match, Ravindra revealed that he was mentally prepared for this challenge due to his past experiences of opening for his domestic side – Wellington. He expressed gratitude for getting the opportunity saying: "I'm pretty lucky that I was able to get the chance to bat at three."
He further added, "It is a bit familiar being able to be at the top and I guess when you've done it for your domestic side, you are somewhat prepared mentally."
Conclusion
Rachin Ravindra's unexpected batting order in the World Cup opener against England turned out to be a masterstroke by the New Zealand coach Gary Stead. It not only showcased Ravindra’s versatility but also set the tone for New Zealand's emphatic victory. His performance has undoubtedly raised expectations and it will be interesting to see if he continues to bat up the order in future matches. Regardless of his position on the field, one thing is clear - Rachin Ravindra is a promising talent who has already made an impact on this global stage.
