Paris Olympics Badminton Drama: Satwiksairaj Rankireddy, Chirag Shetty Advance Without Even Playing Match
Paris Olympics 2024: Injury withdrawals in men's badminton at the 2024 Paris Olympics have had mixed effects on the Indian players. Guatemala's Kevin Cordon's elbow injury left Lakshya Sen in a tough spot in Group L of the singles draw. His straight-game win in his Olympic debut was nullified. However, for men's doubles pair Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty, their opponent's injury withdrawal worked in their favour.
The world No. 3 doubles pair were scheduled to face Germany's Mark Lamsfuss and Marvin Seidel in their second group game at the Paris Olympics. Unfortunately, Lamsfuss suffered a knee injury, leading to their withdrawal from the competition. The Badminton World Federation (BWF) issued a statement wishing Lamsfuss a speedy recovery and announced that the result of Satwik-Chirag's second match would be voided.

Impact on Group C Matches
"German men's doubles player Mark Lamsfuss has withdrawn from the Olympic Games Paris 2024 badminton competition due to a knee injury. Lamsfuss' and teammate Marvin Seidel's remaining Group C matches against India's Satwiksairaj Rankireddy/Chirag Shetty (Court 3, 8.30am local time, 29 July 2024) and Lucas Corvee/Ronan Labar of France (Court 1, 'Not Before' 2.50pm local time, 30 July 2024) will not be played," stated BWF.
The BWF further explained that "Matches on these courts in each respective session have been rescheduled. As per BWF General Competition Regulations for group stage play, the results of all matches played, or yet to be played, involving Group C are now considered deleted." This situation leaves Satwik-Chirag in an advantageous position within their group.
Advantageous Position for Satwik-Chirag
Earlier on Saturday, the Indian duo secured a convincing 21-17, 21-14 victory against France's Lucas Corvee and Ronan Labar in a Group C match. This means if Lucas and Ronan lose to Indonesia's Fajar Alfian and Muhammed Rian Ardianto in their upcoming group-stage tie on Monday, Satwik-Chirag will automatically advance to the quarterfinals.
