Paris Olympics 2024 Outfit Controversy: Team India's Outfits Face Backlash—Designer Tarun Tahiliani Responds
The Paris Olympics 2024, which kicked off on July 26 and will continue until August 11, has brought together the globe's finest athletes in the ultimate fashion capital.
The grand opening ceremony featured participants from various countries showcasing outfits that highlighted their unique styles and cultures. However, Team India's attire, designed by renowned designer Tarun Tahiliani, has drawn considerable criticism.

Team India's Attire: A Missed Opportunity?
While athletes from other nations turned heads with their vibrant and high-fashion ensembles, Team India's outfits have been described as underwhelming. The garments, which feature basic kurta sets and sarees adorned with digital prints and tricolour patterns, have been criticized for not meeting the high-fashion standards seen elsewhere. Netizens have been vocal about their disappointment, feeling that the attire missed an opportunity to make a bold and memorable statement on the global stage.
Tarun Tahiliani Responds to Criticism
In the wake of the backlash, Tarun Tahiliani has defended his design choices. He stated that his team adhered to the International Olympic Committee's guidelines while creating the outfits. Speaking with NDTV, Tahiliani addressed the criticism head-on. "This is what we Indians wear, and this is not meant to be a couture show," he said.
He emphasized that the design aimed to reflect the colours of the Indian tricolour, making it recognizable from a distance. Despite acknowledging varied opinions on the design, Tahiliani stood by his work.
Tahiliani further clarified that while zardozi vests might have been a more traditional choice, they were impractical for the occasion. He noted that the team had only three weeks to prepare 300 uniforms, making handloom options unfeasible. The designer also pointed out that despite the use of digital prints, traditional elements were included, such as brocade shoes from Banaras.
The Backlash: Voices from the Internet
The outfits, a collaboration between Tarun Tahiliani and Tasva, were intended to blend tradition with modernity, inspired by the Indian tricolour flag. However, the design has faced significant criticism online. Many users have expressed dissatisfaction, calling the outfits disappointing and lacking in sophistication.
One user commented, "There was an opportunity for you to shine. Instead, you delivered something tacky and cheap-looking, failing to reflect India's richness. Very disappointing." Another added, "I've seen better sarees on Mumbai streets for Rs. 200 than these ceremonial uniforms. Cheap polyester, Ikat prints, and tricolours are thrown together with no imagination. Did you outsource it to an intern or come up with it at the last minute? Such a disgrace to India's rich weaving culture and history."
What We Understood...
The response to Team India's Olympic outfits underscores the high expectations surrounding national attire on the world stage. While Tarun Tahiliani and his team had specific constraints, the criticism highlights the challenges of balancing tradition and modernity while meeting international standards. As the Paris Olympics continues, the debate over these outfits serves as a reminder of the intricate interplay between fashion, culture, and global representation.
