Gambhir Appeals to ICC: Reassess Two New-Ball Rule for Fair Play
Former India opener Gautam Gambhir has called on the International Cricket Council (ICC) to reconsider the rule of using two new balls in limited-overs cricket, labeling it as detrimental to finger spinners. This rule, introduced in October 2011, was criticized by cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar as a "perfect recipe for disaster." During the Rise to Leadership talk show organized by the Indian Chamber of Commerce, Gambhir expressed his concerns over the current regulations that he believes unfairly disadvantage certain types of bowlers.

Gambhir pointed out that the use of two new balls in one-day internationals (ODIs) has significantly reduced the effectiveness of finger spinners and nearly eliminated the phenomenon of reverse swing, making it challenging for these bowlers to excel in white-ball cricket. "It is very unfair for finger spiners," he remarked, emphasizing the need for the ICC to ensure an equal playing field for all players, regardless of their specializations.
The cricketer, who has been pivotal in India's cricketing successes including their World Cup win, also touched upon his career and leadership experiences. He refrained from singling out any individual as the best captain he played under but praised MS Dhoni's leadership during what he considers the best phase of his career. Furthermore, Gambhir lauded Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan for being the best team owner in the Indian Premier League (IPL), reflecting on his time with Kolkata Knight Riders.
As discussions about future coaching roles surface, Gambhir's name has been mentioned as a potential candidate to succeed Rahul Dravid as India's coach following the T20 World Cup. His insights into the game and suggestions for rule changes underscore his deep understanding and passion for cricket.
Gambhir's critique of the two-ball rule in ODIs underscores a broader concern about maintaining a balance between bat and ball in cricket. By advocating for a review of this rule, he hopes to open up opportunities for a wider range of players and ensure that talents across all facets of cricket are given a chance to shine. His comments reflect a desire to see adjustments in the sport that could potentially enhance competitive fairness and viewer engagement.
