Ricky Ponting Criticises Gautam Gambhir, Shubman Gill For Pressurising B Sai Sudharsan

B Sai Sudharsan's performance during the India vs England Test series has drawn criticism from Ricky Ponting, who questions the management's treatment of young talent. Sudharsan's inconsistent selection adds pressure, impacting his potential to succeed.

In the ongoing Test series between India and England, B Sai Sudharsan's performance has been under scrutiny. During the fourth Test in Manchester, Sudharsan was dismissed without scoring in the second innings. His early departure, along with Yashasvi Jaiswal's similar fate, put India in a challenging position. Despite this setback, KL Rahul and Shubman Gill have managed to steady the innings.

Ricky Ponting, a former Australian cricket legend, expressed his concerns about how India's team management is handling young talents like Sudharsan. He criticised Skipper Shubman Gill and head coach Gautam Gambhir for not providing enough support to emerging players. Ponting believes that such actions create unnecessary internal pressure on these youngsters.

Pressure on Young Players

Ponting highlighted that Sudharsan was included in the first Test but was dropped after failing to perform. He then sat out the second and third matches before being recalled for the fourth Test. This inconsistent selection approach, according to Ponting, adds undue stress on young players who are already trying to prove themselves.

"It just creates internal pressure, the pressure a youngster doesn't need or someone coming in doesn't need looking over their shoulders on if they will get another opportunity," Ponting told Sky Sports. He further expressed surprise at Sudharsan's initial selection followed by his exclusion and subsequent return.

The Need for Consistent Support

Ponting emphasised that promising players like Sudharsan require consistent backing from team leaders. He suggested that young cricketers should be assured of their place in the team for a reasonable period to showcase their potential without fear of being dropped after minor setbacks.

"For a young bloke, you want that bit of reassurance from your captain and your coaches - We are picking you now and we are going to give you a decent run at it and see how you go. I've got no doubt that Sudarshan is going to be good enough," he added.

As India reached 174/2 by the end of Day 4, the final day promises to be crucial. The Indian batters will need to deliver exceptional performances to secure a favourable outcome against England.
