PM Modi Mourns Anshuman Gaekwad's Death: 'A Gifted Player and Outstanding Coach'

Former Indian cricketer Anshuman Gaekwad passed away on Wednesday after a prolonged struggle with cancer. He was 71 years old.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences, stating "Shri Anshuman Gaekwad Ji will be remembered for his contribution to cricket. He was a gifted player and an outstanding coach. Pained by his demise. Condolences to his family and admirers. Om Shanti."

Gaekwad had been battling blood cancer and was receiving treatment at King's College Hospital in London before returning to India last month. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) contributed Rs 1 crore towards his treatment, and members of the 1983 World Cup-winning team also provided support.

Gaekwad's Cricketing Journey

Anshuman Gaekwad's cricket career included playing 40 Test matches and 15 One Day Internationals (ODIs) for India. His tenure as a player spanned over two decades, during which he also participated in 205 first-class matches.

After retiring as a player, Gaekwad transitioned into coaching the Indian cricket team. Under his guidance, the team achieved significant milestones, including finishing as runners-up at the 2000 ICC Champions Trophy.

Memorable Coaching Moments

Gaekwad's coaching career is marked by notable achievements such as the team's performance in Sharjah in 1998 and the historic Test match at Ferozeshah Kotla in 1999 when Anil Kumble took all ten wickets in an innings against Pakistan.

The cricket community mourns the loss of a versatile figure who contributed immensely both on and off the field. His legacy as a player and coach will continue to inspire future generations of cricketers.

Gaekwad's contributions to Indian cricket remain significant, reflecting his dedication and passion for the sport. His passing leaves a void that will be felt deeply by fans and players alike.
