Here's Why KL Rahul Is Not Playing Delhi's Opening Game Vs Lucknow

KL Rahul, a key player for the Delhi Capitals, was noticeably absent from their IPL 2025 season opener against the Lucknow Super Giants in Visakhapatnam, sparking curiosity and concern among fans. The seasoned batter had to skip the match on Monday, March 24, for personal reasons.

It turned out that Rahul needed to be with his family as he and his wife, Athiya Shetty, anticipate the arrival of their first child. Reports suggest that he left the Delhi team's camp in Visakhapatnam on Sunday to join his family. Fans and teammates are hopeful for his return to the lineup for the second match, where the Capitals will face off against SunRisers Hyderabad in Vizag.

In Rahul's absence, the Delhi Capitals fielded a strong team including Jake Fraser-McGurk, vice-captain Faf du Plessis, fast bowler Mitchell Starc, and Tristan Stubbs as their four overseas players. This match also marked Axar Patel's debut as the full-time captain of the team. Despite missing one of their star players, the team showcased their depth by selecting 21-year-old Vipraj Nigam, a promising leg-spinner and a capable lower-order hitter.

Alongside captain Axar Patel and Kuldeep Yadav, Nigam contributed to a potent spin attack. The pace department saw Mitchell Starc, Mukesh Kumar, and Mohit Sharma taking the reins, leaving out T Natajan.

The Lucknow Super Giants, on the other hand, presented a formidable lineup with players like Aiden Markram, Mitchell Marsh, Nicholas Pooran, and Ayush Badoni, under the captaincy of Rishabh Pant. Despite missing the pace of injured fast bowlers like Mayank Yadav, Mohsin Khan, and Avesh Khan, Lucknow compensated with a strong spin contingent featuring Ravi Bishnoi, Shahbaz Ahmed, and newcomer Digvesh Rathi. The inclusion of Rajvardhan Hangargekar among the Impact Subs offered an additional pace option for Lucknow.

The team compositions for both sides highlighted their strategic approaches and adaptability to the absence of key players. Delhi Capitals' decision to include young talent and focus on a balanced attack of spin and pace underlines their preparation and confidence in their squad depth.

Similarly, Lucknow's reliance on their spinners and versatile players in the face of injury setbacks showcases their resilience and tactical planning.
