BCCI To Sack India Head Coach Gautam Gambhir?

Gautam Gambhir, the head coach of the Indian cricket team, might be on the brink of losing his position, especially in the Test format, if the team's performance does not improve. Following his successful stint with Kolkata Knight Riders, expectations were high when Gambhir took over the coaching duties.

However, his tenure has been marked by setbacks, including an ODI series defeat in Sri Lanka and a disappointing Test series loss to New Zealand on home soil. These outcomes have led to increased scrutiny from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), particularly with the upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia posing as a crucial challenge for Gambhir.

This series is considered pivotal in determining whether he retains his coaching role for the longest format of the game.

Reports suggest that a failure in the upcoming series in Australia might prompt the BCCI to appoint a specialist, possibly VVS Laxman, for the Test cricket coach's role while keeping Gambhir on for the limited-overs formats.

According to media reports the potential shift in coaching responsibilities depending on the team's performance in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. The decision on whether Gambhir would agree to such a change remains uncertain. A closely contested series might leave the BCCI with a difficult decision regarding Gambhir's future.

Gambhir's position came under intense discussion during a six-hour meeting with BCCI selection committee chief Ajit Agarkar and India's ODI and Test captain Rohit Sharma. The focus of the meeting was India's recent Test series loss to New Zealand and identifying the contributing factors. Disagreements between Gambhir and the Indian team's think-tank over team selection decisions have surfaced, adding tension ahead of the critical Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

Such differences are not conducive to team harmony, emphasizing the need for a unified approach to overcome the challenges in the forthcoming series.
