BCCI Rules Out Immediate Sacking of Gautam Gambhir as India Coach, Confirms Tenure Till 2027

The Indian cricket board has decided not to dismiss head coach Gautam Gambhir after the team's 0-2 Test series defeat to South Africa. According to sources cited by NDTV, despite rising speculation about a possible change, the board remains committed to Gambhir's long-term project as he works on rebuilding the Test squad.

Reports had suggested that VVS Laxman might be considered for the red-ball coaching role, but officials have clarified that there is no such move in progress. A detailed review meeting with the selectors and team management will take place once the ongoing South Africa white-ball series concludes.

BCCI Confirms Tenure and Future Plans

BCCI insiders stressed that there is no plan to replace Gambhir right now and that his position remains secure.

"We are not looking to replace Gautam Gambhir at the moment. He is rebuilding a team. His contract runs till the 2027 World Cup," the sources told.

They also indicated that the post-tour meeting will focus on strengthening the Test setup.

"There will be a meeting between team management and selectors at the end of the South Africa tour. Gambhir will be asked how to pick up the test team's performance while transitioning," the sources added.

Rising Scrutiny After Back-to-Back Home Series Losses

India's recent red-ball struggles have intensified debate about the team's direction, especially with two home Test series defeats recorded in just over a year. These setbacks prompted some observers to call for a change at the top, but the board believes Gambhir deserves more time to shape the next phase of Indian cricket.

Gavaskar Defends Gambhir's Coaching Record

Amid the criticism, former India captain Sunil Gavaskar publicly backed Gambhir and urged fans to look at the broader picture.

"He's a coach. The coach can prepare a team. The coach can tell, you know, a guy with his experience. But it's out there in the middle that the players have to deliver. Now, to those who are asking, you know, for him to be held accountable, my question, counter-question is: what did you do when India won the Champions Trophy under him? What did you do when India won the Asia Cup under him?" he said.

Gavaskar further questioned the inconsistency of critics.

"Did you say then, you're asking for a sacking now, did you say then that he should be given an extended contract, a contract for life for one day cricket and for T20 cricket? You didn't say that. It's only when a team doesn't do well you look at the coach," he added.
