Ashwin's Retirement Sparks India’s Search For A New Spinner— Who Can Replace Him?
Indian cricket was rocked by the announcement of star spinner Ravichandran Ashwin's retirement from all formats of the game. The right-arm off-spinner, who made his debut for India in 2010, has concluded an illustrious career, amassing 537 Test wickets. Ashwin's departure has left a massive void in the Indian cricket team, and the selectors now face the challenging task of filling the shoes of one of the greatest spinners in world cricket.
As India looks to the future, here's a look at three potential candidates who could replace Ashwin in Test cricket, particularly in red-ball cricket, where Ashwin has been a stalwart.

1. Kuldeep Yadav
Kuldeep Yadav has been India's premier wrist-spinner in white-ball cricket for several years. Although his primary role has been in limited-overs formats, Yadav has also shown promise in Tests. He has played 12 Test matches, claiming 54 wickets, including four five-wicket hauls. With his unique ability to turn the ball both ways, Kuldeep could fill the gap left by Ashwin in the Test side. His last Test appearance was in March 2024 against England, and Ashwin's retirement has now opened the door for the 30-year-old to make a stronger claim for a Test spot. The selectors will need to decide whether Kuldeep is ready to step up as Ashwin's replacement in the long format.
2. Washington Sundar
Washington Sundar is another promising candidate for a place in the Indian team, especially given his all-round skills. Sundar, who is currently part of the squad for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT), was even selected ahead of Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja in the first match, signaling the team management's trust in his abilities. While Sundar missed out on the final two Tests of the BGT, Ashwin's retirement could now present a perfect opportunity for him to cement his place. In his six Test matches, Sundar has scored 354 runs and taken 22 wickets, showcasing his potential as both a bowler and a lower-order batsman. With his ability to contribute in both departments, Sundar could be an ideal candidate to fill Ashwin's shoes in the future.
3. Tanush Kotian
If the Indian selectors turn their attention to the domestic circuit for Ashwin's replacement, Tanush Kotian emerges as a strong contender. The 26-year-old has been exceptional in first-class cricket, taking 101 wickets and amassing 1525 runs, including two centuries and 13 fifties. Kotian's all-round capabilities make him an exciting option for India, particularly if they seek a long-term replacement for Ashwin. With his impressive performances at the domestic level, Kotian could prove to be a valuable asset for India in the Test format, offering a blend of both batting and bowling skills.
