Leopard Kills Dog In Pune, Caught On Camera, Residents In Fear
A leopard attack in Pune has raised alarm among villagers after a pet dog was killed by the animal. The incident, which occurred in Warulwadi near Narayangaon on Saturday night, was captured on CCTV. The footage shows the leopard emerging from a dark alley at 11 pm, grabbing the dog, and running away. Another dog chased the leopard but it escaped with its prey.
The residents of Junnar tehsil are now living in fear due to repeated leopard sightings. This latest attack has intensified their concerns, prompting them to demand immediate action from the forest department to capture the leopard. The fear among villagers is palpable as they worry about their safety and that of their pets.

Leopard Sightings and Safety Concerns
Junnar is one of four Pune tehsils declared "potential leopard disaster-prone areas" in June. The other three tehsils are Ambegaon, Khed, and Shirur, encompassing a total of 233 villages. These areas have seen frequent leopard sightings, causing anxiety among residents who fear for their safety.
A month ago, a leopard was spotted on the Rajarambapu Institute of Technology campus on Pune's outskirts. This sighting led to a search operation by forest and fire brigade officials in nearby areas. Wildlife experts were also involved in the search to locate and safely capture the animal.
Forest Department's Response
The state forest department has sought approval from the additional director general of wildlife in the Union forests ministry for sterilising 47 leopards. This measure aims to control the leopard population and reduce human-animal conflicts in these regions. Villagers hope that such steps will mitigate the risk posed by these predators.
The recent attack has left villagers scared and demanding swift action from authorities. They believe capturing the leopard is crucial to restoring their sense of security. The forest department's response will be closely watched as residents await measures to address this pressing issue.
The ongoing situation underscores the need for effective wildlife management strategies to ensure both human and animal safety. As leopards continue to encroach on human settlements, finding a balance between conservation efforts and community protection becomes increasingly important.
Residents remain vigilant, hoping that authorities will take decisive action to prevent further incidents. The community's call for immediate intervention highlights their urgent need for reassurance and safety amidst these recurring threats.
