Tahir Hussain Kicks Off Delhi Assembly Election 2025 Campaign in Mustafabad Amid Heavy Police Presence

Former AAP councillor and 2020 Delhi riots accused Tahir Hussain kicked off his election campaign in Mustafabad on Wednesday under police custody, a day after the Supreme Court granted him six-day custody parole.

Hussain, who is contesting the upcoming Delhi Assembly elections on an AIMIM ticket, left Tihar Jail at 6 am and reached his election office on Mustafabad's 25-Foota Road, where he interacted with supporters and greeted local residents under tight security.

However, as per the Supreme Court's directives, he is barred from visiting his Karawal Nagar residence-an alleged riot site from 2020-and is prohibited from making public statements regarding his ongoing cases.

On Tuesday, the Supreme Court granted him custody parole from January 29 to February 3, permitting him to campaign under police supervision for 12 hours daily, from 6 am to 6 pm.

A bench comprising Justices Vikram Nath, Sanjay Karol, and Sandeep Mehta ruled that Hussain must pay Rs 2.47 lakh per day to cover security costs, including the police escort. The Mustafabad constituency has 2,88,902 registered voters, including 1,55,706 men, 1,33,193 women, and three third-gender voters.

In the Mustafabad Assembly race, major parties have fielded prominent candidates. The BJP has nominated Mohan Singh Bisht, the sitting MLA from Karawal Nagar, while AAP has fielded Adil Ahmad Khan, an associate of the party since the Anna Hazare movement. The Congress has chosen Ali Mehdi, son of former MLA Hasan Mehdi.

Delhi will vote on February 5, with results set to be announced on February 8.
