Old Delhi Railway Station To Be Renamed...? Delhi CM Rekha Gupta Writes To Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has reached out to Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw requesting to rename the iconic Old Delhi Railway Station. In her letter, Delhi CM has requested Old Delhi Railway Station to be renamed as Maharaja Agrasen Railway Station. The proposal aims to honour Maharaja Agrasen, historical figure who significantly influenced India's socio-economic development, especially in Delhi.

The Old Delhi Railway Station, also known as Delhi Junction Railway Station, resembles a fort with two sides: Kashmere Gate and Chandni Chowk. These areas are connected by an elevated pedestrian bridge called Kodiya Pul. The station's architecture and location make it a significant landmark in the city.

Maharaja Agrasen's Legacy

Maharaja Agrasen is celebrated for his contributions to social justice and welfare. He is remembered for his economic foresight and community welfare initiatives. His followers and descendants continue to shape Delhi's economic and cultural landscape today. Renaming the station would acknowledge his lasting impact on the region.

Agrasen was a legendary king from Agroha, a city of traders in Haryana's Hisar district. He founded a kingdom of traders in Northern India called Agroha. Known for his compassion, he opposed animal sacrifices in yajnas, reflecting his progressive views on social justice.

Significance of Renaming

The Agrawals, traditional traders from northern India, consider Maharaja Agrasen their forefather. They credit him with laying the foundations of their community in Agroha. Renaming the station would resonate deeply with millions of Delhi residents who hold him in high regard.

Gupta believes that renaming the station would be a fitting tribute to Maharaja Agrasen's enduring contributions. She expressed gratitude for any intervention by Vaishnaw to facilitate this proposal's favourable consideration by the Ministry.
