Exploring the Evolution of Indo-Greek Relations

Historical Background

India's relations with Greece have deep historical roots, dating back centuries. From Alexander the Great's invasion in 326 BCE to trade between the Mauryan Kings and Greece, the two nations share a rich history of economic and cultural exchanges.

Formal diplomatic relations between India and Greece were established three years after India's Independence. Greece opened its Embassy in Delhi in 1950, while India reciprocated with an embassy in Athens in 1978.

Over the years, the bilateral relationship has been characterized by shared cultural values, economic collaboration, and cooperation on regional and global issues. Both countries have supported each other on various international platforms, including India's bid for a permanent seat at the UN Security Council.

Recent Developments and Upgrades in Ties

While the relations between India and Greece have historically revolved around tourism, trade, and labour migration, recent years have witnessed significant upgrades and expansions in various sectors under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

In August 2023, during PM Modi's visit to Athens, the bilateral ties were elevated to a strategic partnership. This marked a significant milestone in the relationship between the two nations, with both sides committing to strengthen cooperation in defence, security, infrastructure, agriculture, education, technology, and skill development.

The elevation of ties was preceded by groundwork laid during External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar's visit to Greece in 2021. The two countries also agreed to double bilateral trade by 2030 and explore opportunities for collaboration in migration and mobility.

    Significance of the Partnership

Greece holds strategic importance for India as a gateway to Europe, facilitating economic connectivity between South and West Asia and Europe. The India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC) aims to leverage Greece's geographic position to enhance trade and connectivity between the regions.

Additionally, Greece's emergence as a key player in India's Mediterranean outreach presents opportunities for collaboration in defence, maritime security, and commercial ventures. India's participation in multinational military exercises hosted by Greece, along with discussions on defence sales and naval modernization, underscores the growing defence cooperation between the two countries.

Overall, the deepening Indo-Greek partnership reflects India's broader engagement in the Indo-Pacific region and its commitment to upholding freedom of navigation and promoting regional stability.

In conclusion, the visit of Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis to India symbolizes the evolving dynamics of Indo-Greek relations and highlights the shared commitment of both nations to deepen cooperation across various domains for mutual benefit and regional stability.
