Education Minister's First Reaction To Rau IAS Coaching Deaths: Was It All Due To Negligence?
Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan attributed the deaths of three civil services aspirants at a coaching centre in New Delhi's Rajendra Place to negligence.
"There was negligence. Only when accountability is fixed, there will be a solution...It is our responsibility to ensure that such an incident is not repeated," ANI quoted the minister as saying in the Rajya Sabha.

Rau's IAS Study Circle, where the tragic incident occurred, has been sealed by police. The basement of the coaching centre flooded due to rain, leading to unfortunate deaths. The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) took swift action by sealing 13 illegal coaching centres in the area on Sunday.
Government Response and Accountability
The Education Minister also highlighted that guidelines for regulating coaching centres were issued in January this year. However, he criticised the government's failure to enforce these regulations effectively. "The government which should have regulated the coaching institutes seriously failed to do so," he stated.
In response to the tragedy, MCD terminated a junior engineer and suspended an assistant engineer linked to the incident. MCD Commissioner Ashwani Kumar confirmed these actions while speaking with PTI.
MCD's Immediate Actions
The Aam Aadmi Party-controlled MCD launched an anti-encroachment drive following the deaths. This drive led to the termination of one official and suspension of another. The civic body aimed to address illegal constructions and prevent similar incidents in the future.
Earlier, during a Lok Sabha session, Minister Pradhan reiterated that accountability must be established to prevent such tragedies from recurring. He emphasised that ensuring safety at coaching centres is a shared responsibility, as reported by Hindustan Times.
Public Reaction and Further Measures
In Rajya Sabha, Trivedi expressed disappointment over the lack of visible concern from those responsible for regulating these centres. "It is sad that those who were responsible for them, not only did they not shed any tears nor did they have any tension on their faces," he remarked.
A student had flagged concerns about illegal basements at Rau's IAS Study Circle a month before the incident. This highlights ongoing issues with enforcement and oversight in educational facilities, as per media reports.
The tragic event has sparked discussions on improving safety standards at coaching centres across India. Ensuring strict adherence to regulations and holding officials accountable are crucial steps moving forward.
The government's commitment to addressing these issues will be closely monitored by students and parents alike. Ensuring safe learning environments remains a top priority for all stakeholders involved.
