Operation Eagle: How Delhi Police Disrupted An Illegal Arms Syndicate
In a sweeping crackdown on illegal arms trade, Delhi Police's crime branch has apprehended 18 individuals from various walks of life, including a five-star hotel cleaner and a barber, who led double lives as suppliers of illegal firearms to criminals. The arrests, hailed as a major disruption to the illicit arms supply in Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR), came as part of the meticulously planned 'Operation Eagle'. This operation uncovered a vast network of gunrunners, revealing that by day, these suspects performed regular jobs such as hotel staff, salon workers, security guards, and even students, but by night, they engaged in the clandestine trade of firearms.
The operation was spearheaded by additional CP Sanjay Bhatia and DCP (Crime) Bisham Singh, with significant contributions from ACP Arvind and inspectors Mangesh Tyagi and Robin Tyagi. It began with a tip-off regarding two individuals, Arshad and Mohammed Suleman, planning a robbery in Noida armed with illegal weapons. A dramatic arrest ensued in Ghazipur's paper market, where police intercepted their car, discovering firearms and stolen items. This pivotal moment led to further investigations, enabling the police to unravel a larger network of criminals involved in the illegal arms trade. The suspects hail from various parts of Delhi and its neighboring regions like Ghaziabad and Baghpat, driven by the lure of quick money, they ventured into this risky business.

Among the arrested is the notorious kingpin, Madan, a 33-year-old from Ghaziabad, who masterminded the operation from behind bars. Madan, already implicated in numerous criminal cases ranging from murder to extortion, has been a pivotal figure in the illegal arms trade, supplying weapons to various criminal factions within the region. His arrest, following a court order for his custody while already incarcerated, underscores the depth of criminal activities he orchestrated.
"The operation has dealt a significant blow to the interstate arms syndicate, disrupting the supply chain of illegal weapons and potentially preventing numerous crimes," stated Devesh Shrivastava, the special commissioner. The profound impact of these arrests is echoed in the diversity of the accused's day jobs, ranging from labor-intensive roles to various service-oriented positions, all united by the common thread of engaging in the dangerous trade of illegal arms for financial gain. Their motivations, primarily driven by the allure of easy money, underscore the complex socio-economic factors that often push individuals into the criminal underworld.
The police's haul from this operation included an impressive array of illegal weaponry: four semi-automatic pistols, eight country-made pistols, one rifle, 33 live cartridges, and a stolen car, illustrating the scale and potential threat posed by this network. The diverse backgrounds of those arrested—ranging from hotel staff and security guards to students and farmers—highlight the covert nature of this illicit trade, where individuals leading seemingly ordinary lives are drawn into the realm of criminal activities.
This comprehensive operation not only showcases the diligence and bravery of the Delhi Police but also illuminates the intricate networks of the illegal arms trade spanning across Delhi and NCR. By targeting these gunrunners, the police have significantly hindered the flow of illegal arms in the region, potentially averting a myriad of crimes. The operation's success narrates a cautionary tale of the hidden dangers lurking within seemingly mundane professions, where individuals choose a path of crime, swayed by the deceptive allure of quick financial gains.
