Delhi Elections 2025: Who's The Richest And Poorest Candidate?

Dharam Pal Lakra: The Richest Candidate in Delhi Elections

Dharam Pal Lakra, a businessman and agriculturist, is the wealthiest candidate in the fray. According to his 2020 election affidavit, Lakra's total assets amounted to ₹292.1 crore. This includes ₹243 crore in immovable assets, primarily agricultural land owned by his family, and ₹3.24 crore in movable properties.

Lakra, who previously represented the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), has now joined the Congress and is contesting from the Mundka constituency. With his immense wealth, he is speculated to remain the richest candidate in the 2025 Delhi elections, further solidifying his status as the wealthiest individual in the 65-member Delhi Assembly.

In 2020, Lakra was three times richer than the next wealthiest candidate, Parmila Tokas, and his assets surpassed those of many of his contemporaries combined.

Other Wealthy Candidates in 2020

Apart from Lakra, the list of affluent candidates in 2020 included:

  • Parmila Tokas (AAP): ₹80.8 crore
  • Ram Singh Netaji (AAP): ₹80 crore
  • Raaj Kumar Anand (AAP): ₹76 crore

These candidates collectively showcased the significant financial muscle of some contestants in Delhi politics. However, their updated declarations for the 2025 elections are awaited.

Rakhi Birla: Among the Least Wealthy Candidates

At the opposite end is Rakhi Birla, AAP's candidate from the Madipur constituency, known for her grassroots work. Birla's affidavit in 2020 revealed movable assets of ₹26.48 lakh, with her spouse declaring ₹12.03 lakh. Unlike some of her affluent counterparts, Birla and her spouse do not own any land, residential properties, or commercial buildings.

Birla's simplicity and modest lifestyle are reflected in her financial disclosures. Her primary source of income is her salary, while her spouse is engaged in a small business.

Durgesh Pathak: Another Modest Candidate

Another notable name among the less wealthy candidates is AAP leader Durgesh Pathak, who contested from Karawal Nagar in the previous elections. Pathak declared ₹5.24 lakh in movable assets, with his spouse listing ₹14.22 lakh. He owns no immovable property or agricultural land, underscoring his modest financial background.

Significance of Wealth Disparity in Elections

The wealth gap among candidates sheds light on the diversity of Delhi's political landscape. On one side are politicians like Lakra, who wield significant financial influence, while on the other are leaders like Birla and Pathak, who represent more relatable, middle-class backgrounds.
