New Year, New Roads: Maharashtra’s Transport To Upgrade; Pune Circular Road, Nagpur Expressways, And More

The Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) is gearing up for a significant year in 2025, with multiple road projects nearing completion and several new ones set to begin. Among these is the Nagpur-Mumbai Samruddhi Highway's Igatpuri-Aamne section, which is now fully completed, with final touches underway. This section is expected to open for traffic by March, reducing the travel time between Nagpur and Mumbai to just eight hours, as per the Loksatta report.

Progress At Key Routes

March will also see the northern side of the Thane Creek Bridge 3 coming into service. This bridge, constructed parallel to Thane Creek Bridge 2, aims to ease traffic on the heavily used Thane Creek Bridges 1 and 2. While the southern route (Mumbai to Pune) opened in September, the northern route (Pune to Mumbai) is set for inauguration in March.

Additionally, progress is being made on the "missing link" project on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway. The Khopoli-Kusgaon new lane, a key part of this project, is expected to open by June 2025. Once operational, this new link will cut Mumbai-Pune travel time by 25 minutes.

New Projects In 2025

According to the same report, MSRDC Managing Director Anil Kumar Gaikwad highlighted the corporation's ambitious plans for 2025, including:

Pune Circular Road: Land acquisition is complete, and construction will begin in 2025.
Samruddhi Highway Expansion: New expressways are planned between Nagpur and Chandrapur, Bhandara and Gadchiroli, and Nagpur and Gondiya.
Jalna-Nanded Expressway: Part of the Samruddhi Highway's extension.

Alibaug-Virar Multipurpose Corridor

The Alibaug-Virar Multipurpose Corridor, a crucial project for the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, is also set to begin in 2025. The long-stalled project has cleared hurdles related to land acquisition, and the contract has been finalised.

A Year of Acceleration

With these developments, 2025 is poised to be a transformative year for Maharashtra's road network. From faster intercity journeys to enhanced urban transport systems, these projects promise to significantly improve travel across the state.
