A day following the collapse of a ground-plus-three-storey building in Shabaz Village, Belapur, which resulted in three fatalities and two injuries, the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) took immediate action to address similar risks.

The collapse of the building, constructed by Mahesh Khumbar, prompted the NMMC to launch a major demolition drive targeting unauthorised structures throughout the city.

The extensive demolition operation took place across all eight wards of Navi Mumbai. Key targets included illegal constructions by Mahesh Khumbar, whose building's failure highlighted serious concerns about building safety. An FIR has been lodged with Belapur police against both Khumbar and the plot owner.

2. Other Areas:
a. Ravindra Waghmare's Shops: Eight shops owned by Ravindra Waghmare, a relative of the plot owner where the collapse occurred, were also demolished.
b. Turbhe Ward: An illegal extension to a home was removed.
c. Koparkhairane: Demolition was carried out at two residential properties due to unauthorised construction.
d. Ghansoli Ward: Additional construction on the 6th floor, including an unauthorised plinth and RCC column, was taken down.

Official Statements

Dr Rahul Gethe, Deputy Municipal Commissioner (Encroachment), stated, "Notices had already been issued by the ward office regarding the illegal constructions and extensions, but there was no compliance. Therefore, these structures were demolished by the corporation."

Following the Belapur incident, the civic body served 75 notices to various illegal structures across the city and plans to issue more in the coming days.

Municipal Commissioner Kailas Shinde emphasized, "A ward-wise survey has been undertaken to identify illegal constructions, and notices have been served. The simultaneous demolition drives across all eight wards on Sunday are part of a larger effort. Moving forward, we will maintain zero tolerance for illegal activities as lives are at risk from substandard constructions."

The NMMC's swift action aims to prevent future tragedies and ensure the safety of Navi Mumbai's residents by addressing illegal and unsafe building practices.
