Mumbai Transport Fares Go Up: Auto, Taxi, And Bus Charges Revised; Check New Prices Inside

Mumbai commuters will soon experience a fare hike for auto-rickshaws, taxis, and public buses, as the State Transport Authority (STA) and Mumbai Metropolitan Road Transport Authority (MMRTA) have officially approved the increase. The basic fare for auto-rickshaws will rise by Rs 2, while taxis and municipal corporation-operated public buses will see a Rs 3 increase, according to a Hindustan Times (HT) news.

Along with the base fare hike, additional fare increases for longer journeys are also set to take effect. The fare for the subsequent stages of specific distances will rise by Rs 3 and Rs 4 for autos, taxis, and buses, as per officials from the home department. This change comes as part of a broader effort to adjust to rising operational costs and pressures on transport operators.

The fare increase follows demands from auto and taxi unions, which had initially requested base fares of Rs 26 for auto-rickshaws and Rs 31 for taxis, up from the current Rs 23 and Rs 28, respectively. While the final decision on the hike falls short of these demands, the approval is still seen as a significant adjustment for the city's transport sector.

Once the formal notification is issued by the government, the iconic 'kaali-peeli' autos and taxis will be given time to recalibrate their electronic meters to reflect the new rates. Similarly, the revised fares will be applicable to public buses operated by various municipal corporations in Mumbai, providing clarity for all commuters using these modes of transport.

While the fare hike aims to alleviate the financial strain on operators dealing with rising fuel prices, it is likely to affect daily commuters. Many Mumbaikars have expressed concern about the rising cost of travel, particularly for those who rely on these services for their daily commute.
