Mumbai Traffic Police New Initiative: Special Team To Handle EV Breakdowns And Clear Traffic Jams
The Mumbai traffic police have formed a four-member team to address the growing issue of electric vehicle (EV) breakdowns on city roads, according to a Midday report. These breakdowns, which increase during the summer months, often cause severe traffic disruptions.
When an EV breaks down, it can block the road, worsening congestion. As first responders, the traffic police are now trained to assist in these situations. With support from a well-known automobile company, four officers have been equipped with the skills to restart stalled EVs and help move them to the nearest garage.
On average, the traffic police receive 18 calls daily about EV breakdowns. M Raamkumar, Additional Commissioner of Police, Mumbai Traffic Police, said, "When an EV stalls, it causes significant traffic jams. Our trained officers help restart the vehicles and get them back on the move."
A senior official explained that when an EV breaks down, it can bring traffic to a standstill, with towing vans often delayed due to congestion. "Our trained officers help drivers restart their vehicles or move them to the side of the road until mechanics or towing vans arrive," the official added.
Each car brand has specific repair protocols and designated mechanics, which the officers contact when needed. In the case of electric buses, BEST mechanics are dispatched to the scene. Generally, traffic is cleared within one to two hours. The officers are also trained to remove obstacles, such as tyre blockages, to help restore smooth traffic flow.
This initiative aims to improve the response time to EV breakdowns and ensure the efficient management of traffic in Mumbai, reducing delays and improving safety for all road users.
