Mumbai Railway Gets Rs 16,240 Crore Makeover: 300 New Trains, Elevated Corridors & State-Of-The-Art Stations
The Indian government has earmarked a substantial sum of Rs 16,240 crore to enhance the railway infrastructure in Mumbai, as reported by the Economic Times. This financial injection, as outlined by Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, is aimed at a comprehensive overhaul including the modernization of stations, the acquisition of land for expansion, the addition of new tracks, the creation of elevated corridors, and the development of interchange links among other significant improvements. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to significantly upgrade Mumbai's transport infrastructure.
In a bid to accommodate the growing needs of Mumbai, the government plans to construct 301 new railway tracks. Moreover, the development includes the establishment of additional terminals at Parel and Jogeshwari and the expansion of existing ones at key locations such as Bandra, Vasai Road, Mumbai Central Terminal, and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT). Notably, efforts will be made to enhance the capacity at Lokmanya Tilak Terminus (LTT) on the Central Line to efficiently segregate local and long-distance train services. The minister also disclosed plans to transform Parel, Panvel, and Kalyan into major junctions during an event.

Project Costs And Completion Timelines Unveiled
The financial breakdown for various projects includes Rs 821 crore allocated for the fifth and sixth lines from CSMT to Kurla, aiming for a completion by December 2025. The extension from Mumbai Central to Borivali along the sixth line is expected to conclude by mid-2025, with a budget of Rs 919 crore. The Harbor Line's extension to Borivali, pegged at Rs 826 crore, is slated for completion by March 2027. Other major projects include the Borivali to Vihar fifth and sixth lines at Rs 2,184 crore, the Vihar to Dahanu Road third and fourth lines costing Rs 3,587 crore, and several others focusing on suburban corridors and elevated tracks, according to the ET report.
The minister stressed the significant impact these projects will have on the daily lives of Mumbai residents, with an anticipated addition of 300 trains to the current fleet once the projects conclude by 2025 to 2027. Furthermore, the introduction of the Kavach 5.0 technology, featuring communication-based train control (CBTC), is expected to enhance efficiency by reducing the minimum gap between trains, thus increasing the network's capacity by 15 per cent, the reported added.
Electrification And Educational Initiatives
With nearly 97 per cent of Mumbai's railway network already electrified, full electrification is on the horizon, expected to be achieved by the year's end. Additionally, the Railway Minister announced the establishment of the Indian Institute of Creative Technology (IICT) in Mumbai, a pioneering educational institution set to match the Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT) in standards. This initiative, supported by funding from Prime Minister Narendra Modi, will see its campus established in Goregaon, underscoring the government's commitment to advancing education alongside infrastructure development.
The comprehensive plan for Mumbai's railway system not only aims to improve the operational capacity and efficiency of the network but also focuses on passenger comfort with upgrades in train technology, better ventilation, and improved oxygen levels in trains. New train models will be rolled out following the completion of these ambitious projects, marking a significant leap towards modernizing Mumbai's railway infrastructure for the future.
Maharashtra Assembly Election 2024
This comprehensive railway overhaul and associated educational advancements come at a pivotal time as Maharashtra gears up for its upcoming assembly elections. The substantial investment in Mumbai's infrastructure is being perceived as a strategic move to appeal to urban voters, highlighting the government's focus on improving connectivity and quality of life.
